I bought the bike brand new in 1994, US (California) specifications. I used to own an Honda Interceptor 750 but too heavy for me. I wanted a light sports bike and really, I only had two choices in 250 class in US, Honda or Kawasaki.
The day that I saw the bike, I loved the way she looks. Sexy, light and quick for it's size. I am pretty light so she's got enough power for me, I love the rev happy engine with 14,000 rpm redline! I took her home a week later. I own a black one and customized it with purple spider webs all over.
The six speed transmission is accurately spaced with the engine rpm range. Excellent brakes! The disc brakes both in front and back provides outstanding stopping power! I like having both center and side stand, makes it easier to oil the chain, I perform all of the maintenance with the bike and she has been really reliable. I have never had a problem, starts all the time. I currently logged 14,000 miles after 9 years. I stored her last October in my brothers garage since I cannot take her overseas, (I had to choose between my car of my bike, I can only take one). I miss her. It is a great bike, I would definitely recommend it to anyone before moving up with big bikes. Light, practical, and economical, I averaged about 38-45 mpg.
I really wish that they came with a fuel gauge, it is hard to predict when you are going to run out of fuel. You just have to excercise and test yourself once in a while to move the fuel lever switch from run to reserve without looking! I am used to it now. Pretty dangerous if you stall in the freeway at 70 mph for running out of fuel, I almost did once. Lessons learned, after I hit 100 miles in the odometer, I go ahead and refuel. The 4.8 gallons of fuel is actually a good size for 250. The H-4 bulb headlight is very difficult to reach to replace!
Too bad that the swing arm does not have any room for a wider tire in the back, the 130mm is kind of skinny. The bike would look much better with 180/50/16's in the back!
To date, all of my routine normal wear and tear expenses are as follows:
Oil and filter change every 6 months or 3,000 miles. The original Dunlop tires only lasted around 8,000 miles, replaced the battery, brake fluid, coolant 3 years later, spark plugs at 12,000 miles. She runs extremely well and cannot wait to ride again.
