Ok, it's seven o' clock in the morning just now; my eyes are barely open, I've weighed out the recommended 40g of Special K into my bowl, added my milk and I'm now sitting at the computer desk, spoon aside me, raring to go (perhaps I shouldn't be eating at the computer, but never mind…).
Peering ... ...say! Extra brownie points to Kellogg's there (ooh, I've just mentioned Brownies and haven't begun to crave rich chocolate…must be a good sign!). The simple variety in texture was quite peculiar and unexpected, but a great joy!
I just hope this great experience is Sustained every time I enjoy a bowl of Special K!

When it comes down to choosing cereal, nutrition is ... more
When I checked the 'Product Of The Week', I was delighted when I noticed it was a cereal product! If I had to live off of one food source for the rest of my life, without a doubt I would opt for breakfast cereal! Not only is there a wide variety to choose from, but it is satisfying and appealing too! After finding myself running low on boxes of cereal, I thought this was the perfect opportunity to try something new and stock up on Special K Sustain!
To be honest, I am not sure why I had not purchased Special K before; the television advert (yes, that's right, the one that kicks off all those cravings as they flaunt the scrumptious-looking foods in our faces!) has made it look very appetising. I'd heard a lot of praise for the Special K products, and I am quite loyal to Kellogg's cereal in general, so I have every faith that this will be a great one too!
**** Ok, it's seven o' clock in the morning just now; my eyes are barely open, I've weighed out the recommended 40g of Special K into my bowl, added my milk and I'm now sitting at the computer desk, spoon aside me, raring to go (perhaps I shouldn't be eating at the computer, but never mind…).
Peering into the bowl, it seems like a healthy portion size to have; not too little, not too much. I think I may have under-done it on the milk though, it's disappeared into the bottom of the bowl! There seems to be a faint smell rising from my bowl; quite gentle and sweet. Pleasant enough, I hope the taste is a glorious! Down goes the spoon, swooping back up with a few of the flakes perched on the end. Straight into my mouth they go, for me to carry out the 'taste test'. Well, not what I expected, anyway! The flakes are quite crunchy at first, and have a slightly rich taste to them. This is not what I expected at all; I thought they'd hold more of a bland and 'basic' flavour. Satisfied, I carry on scooping and eating.
What's this? I've just munched my way through several more spoonfuls, and I've just came across something else. It looks like a cluster of some sort, with little white beads nestled inside it. Well, that was certainly unexpected! On tasting this unusual formation, I've discovered it's the source of the sweet aroma, with its more sugary, nutty taste. Finding them equally as delicious as the flakes, I did a little deeper for another cluster, but out of the entire portion, I only manage to retrieve two.
By the time I get to the last of the flakes, they have softened up a lot more now. Though, they're still not completely soggy or anything, but they do make less noise when you chew! The milk has turned exceptionally sweet now; not what I expected from a Special K cereal! I slurp up the last of the milk and shudder at the much-too sugary rush.
Staring down at my empty bowl, how do I feel? It certainly did the trick in filling me up, that I can say!
Nutrition
When it comes down to choosing cereal, nutrition is generally not an issue; I have a natural taste for the healthier options, and I am not too fond of sugary of chocolate-based breakfasts. Though, I had no idea what Special K Sustain was going to be like calorie-wise. I thought, perhaps it would be quite high because it's supposed to keep you going. At closer inspection, I was quite surprised by what I read!
Well the ingredients don't mean much to me, except that the sweet taste seems more obvious now; I assume it come from the honey and the syrup! The calorie content is quite positive in my opinion, and the amount of fibre per portion is quite impressive!
oOo Benefits Of Eating Special K oOo Not only is it a delicious cereal to enjoy, but eating a bowl of Special K has its benefits too! Because they are low in calories, it's a great way to watch what you eat, and the low fat content can help slim the waist too! Packed with fibre, Special K help the movement in the bowels too, discouraging discomfort and providing a more steady movement. It's also rich in protein, vitamins and iron to keep our bodies healthy!oOo Special K Challenge oOo For those of you who do not know, the Special K 'Drop A Jeans Size' challenge suggests that you eat two bowls of Special K a day; one for breakfast, then again for lunch or dinner. Providing your third 'proper' meal is nutritionally balanced, then all three meals together will provide you everything you need to keep you going throughout the day, and if you are prone to snacking, Kellogg's have provided a Special K cereal bar you can nibble on!
If you continue to do this for the suggested two weeks, you are more likely to lose the weight you would like to, not to mention being full of energy and nutrition! Take note though, Kellogg's have only recommended this diet if you are over the age of 18, and your BMI is over 25 (can be calculated on the site via the link at the bottom of this review).
With the wide range of Special K products, you never need to eat the same cereal portion two bowls in a row, and your snacks too can be alternated! If you do struggle for ideas, again there are tips via the website link.

Red Berries
With a selection of healthy snack alternatives, life need not be dull;
apple and pear cereal bar
chocolate cereal bar
peach and apricot cereal bar
Bliss orange and chocolate cereal bar
Bliss raspberry and cranberry cereal bar
fruits of forest cereal bar
Mini breaks and mini break chocolate
I have seen the majority of these products before in a selection of stores, including Somerfield, Asda, Co-Op, Tesco and Sainsbury's, and I'm sure plenty of other supermarkets and shops stock them too!
I have tried the original Mini Breaks, and I can certainly say they are delicious, and at less than 100 calories a bag, they are a super snacking alternative! I'd quite like to sample some of the cereal bars too! Once I have munched my way through the Sustain, I think I may try the Special K Medley too; a Kellogg's option with raisins - perfect!
Kellogg's - A Brief Background
I'm not sure why (perhaps it is my growing love for anything historical), but I always find myself researching cereal products and their manufactures, tracing it back to see how the company and their stock have changed through the years. Quite often, they have an interesting beginning too! So, in case you too find this sort of information interesting, I shall share some of what I have found out!It was in 1898 that William Keith Kellogg set up the company that started off producing cornflakes in the USA, which is now known as Kellogg's; one of the most successful cereal manufacturers in the world! After challenging the advertising world, and successfully printing health guides on the back of his packets, the company seemed to be a huge triumph. By 1950, it had introduced a whole new range of cereals, including Frosties and Rice Krispies.
These cereals are still being sold right round the world and throughout the UK, as well as a wide variety of other products and varieties of cereals to appeal to all! Some of the more recent products include Coco Pops Munchers and Rice Krispies Muddles.
So…
What's The Verdict? I have sampled my fair share of cereals in my time. In fact, I have sampled quite a few peoples' share of cereal! I am not fussy with what I eat; there are very few kinds I will not eat. Though, I certainly do have my favourites. It so happens that the current top two of these are Kellogg's products; Crunchy Oatbakes. And Bran-Flakes. How does Special K Sustain compare then? Well the sweet taste is quite similar to the Crunchy Oatbakes - a cereal rich in the taste of cinnamon. Though, Sustain has to win the battle here, because although the taste is similar, and both leave me feeling satisfied and full, Special K Sustain is a lot more nutritionally balanced, lower in both sugar and calories.
Sustain also wins the battle with Branflakes too! Both are great nutrition and health-wise, but Sustain has a much more varied and unique taste! My preferred breakfast cereal does differ from week to week, but I'd say just now, Sustain is heading its way to the top of the list, and I have a feeling there it will stay for a while!
Sustain certainly appeals with its marvellous sweet and nutty taste, with its exceptionally textured crunchy flakes and clusters, but the packaging is just as important when it comes to manufacture! It has to stand out on the shelf amongst the other products in competition, and must look attractive so that it catches the eyes of those hungry prowling shoppers. In my opinion, Special K have succeeded here too! Although the main colour of the box is white, the glossy 'K' sticks out marvellously, with a golden glow of yellow shining from the side. It's a decent sized box too, fitting snugly aside my other boxes on the top of the cupboard. Holding 375g of cereal inside its plastic packet, Kellogg's have clearly put in just as much effort into their packaging as they have done to the food itself!
Quick Facts
Packaging; nice size, glossy and glowing, attractive Appearance; looks basic and bland Smell; sweet, scrumptious Texture; crunchy, peculiar Taste; quite sweet, honey and nut Price; £2.89 for 375g ***** So it seems that Special K Sustain has ticked all the right boxes for me; it's delicious in its honey nut taste, leaving me feeling full and content with my breakfast, as well as filling the air with a sweet and scrumptious aroma! Despite being quite pricy compared to other cereals I have purchased, it's certainly worth it! If you have not tried this yourself yet, I shall highly recommend it to you! Once my box is empty though and I go on the hunt for more cereal, I have decided not to buy Sustain again, but broaden my taste of Kellogg's, and sample other Special K cereals!
Advantages: Doesn't taste like cardboard, healthy start Disadvantages: a little bit pricier than others
...story - my introduction to Kellogg's Special K Sustain, because if my story can help even one person desperately trying to find the holy grail of breakfast cereals than I will have helped make this world that little bit brighter. Christmas indulgence is now but a distant memory and as we head towards the end of January, many of us have already forgotten the promises we made to ourselves on the 1st of the month - I have always been amazed at how much ... ...the taste.

Advantages: Does what it says on the advert, tasty Disadvantages: Expensive!
Okay, writing a review on Kellogg's Sustain has helped me with two of my new year resolutions. One - to try and eat more sensibly and nutritiously and two - to write a review on the product of the week! So, to be honest, if it wasn't for the fact that this cereal happened to be product of the week, I would never have purchased it, instead I would have chosen the original Special K. Mainly because Sustain has honey and what I mistakenly assumed were ... ...as most other cereals, including Kellogg's other products are cheaper when at full cost. Kellogg's multigrain cornflakes for example, are £1.69 a pack. The white cardboard packaging has the wellknown big red K on the front, along with 'sustain' written to the right. It also carries the cockerel emblem and unmissable Kellogg's trademark. All in all, it's extremely easy to spot as both a Kellogg's product and a Special K variant.
Most of us know that ...

Advantages: Tasty . low fat , low in calories , high fibre , filling Disadvantages: None for me, could be a little cheaper ?
Kellogg's Special K cereal was available in only one variety a few years ago . This product was low in calories, had a somewhat bland taste and was a little pricey .Special K was usually marketed with dieters in mind although, anyone could eat it obviously . In common with many cereals, the Special K range, has had quite a few different varieties added to it . It now includes cereal bars and more tasty and substantial cereals. However they all are ... ...Special K Sustain from my local Netto for £2 for a 375g box . This works a little more costly than other cereals but represents quite good value for Special K .

The Sustain Special K is so called as it is claimed the cereal helps keep you satisfied for longer. Well it does look a more substantial cereal than the bog standard Special K and I do think it leaves you feeling full for longer .
The box is pretty standard but ...

Kellogg's cereal packets are all quite similar, so it didn't stand out from all the other Special K packets apart from a bright Red foiled K and a small picture of the cereal making it look quite tempting. They have a very simple but very nice taste. The texture varies nicely and they stay crunchy for longer than most cereals. They give you a very good start to the day and they are very healthy
They may be slightly more expensive than the average cereal, but still worth it (*)
