We are always told these days breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so lately I had been making a conscious effort to start my day well. I think, as we all get older we become a bit more aware of our own mortality and start to think more healthily. So with that in mind I have started purchasing Special K, as I have seen the adverts and I would like to loose a little weight without having to seem like I’m on a diet.
About Kellogg’s:
I have known about the Kellogg Company since being a young boy. In those days you didn’t get shop’s own product like you do know you only got the original and genuine article. The company was founded in 1906 by Keith Kellogg with Corn Flakes being their first successful cereal that established the company.
Since then the company had gone from strength to strength, with a factory in Manchester and adding Frosties, Rice Krispies and All Bran to its portfolio of breakfast options during the 1960’s and 1970’s. These days the cereals they make are endless and they also make healthy snack bars.
Special K range:
When I was looking for my Special K I was amazed at how many varieties there are. Although I selected the original Special K, I also saw Red Berries, Bliss, Fruit of the Forest, Medley, Mini Breaks, Oats and Honey, Peach and Apricot, Purple Berries, Sustain, Yoghurty. I was confused by all these choices so I selected the only one I knew and recognised.
Price and Sizes available:
Special K comes in a variety of sizes, but all have the distinctive Special K logo on them. You can purchase these in 375g, 500g and 750g packets. They are also available as part of the Kellogg’s variety packs (eight different Kellogg cereals).
I bought mine from Tesco and for a 500g packet I paid £2.87, this I think is expensive especially when compared to the shops own product at £1.99 for the same size. However I felt on this occasion I needed the quality I believe this product has, especially as I wanted to use it as part of my weight loss programme.
About the product:
Like all the Kellogg products the Special K packet looks attractive and appealing. It shows the multi grain flakes with part of a female’s body, encouraging us to see if we can get slimmer for summer. While on the rear of the packet it goes into much more detail about the slimmer two-week challenge.
While on the sides of the packet you are given more information on what each bowl of Special K gives you, an ingredients list, allergic advice and Nutrition information. It also advises you that for each 30g serving you will get 16 servings. However I must admit I never found 30g was a proper serving and I ended up getting about 10 servings out of the box.
The flakes looked very appealing, they seemed to be a fair consistency and looked thick enough to be crunchy with some substance about them. I found in my bowl there were no black flakes, just the same consistency throughout with some little bits of rice.
When I liberally splashed milk on the product it didn’t exactly snap, crackle and pop but it did make some crackling noises.
Taste:
The moment of truth finally arrived and my mouth was watering just looking at the product. It was surprisingly crunchy and I started to chew on it. You could definitely taste the wheat and rice and it tasted superb. I found it combined excellently with the flakes and made for an enjoyable and very satisfying experience. The flakes reminded me of Corn Flakes is in size but had more depth and thickness to them, not quite as light and bright as them however, more of a dull yellow colour.
My opinion of the product:
For me these tasted sensational, I really liked the crunchiness of them and I found a bowl of this like the adverts lasted till lunchtime. I felt satisfied and content in the knowledge that I was giving myself as good a breakfast as I could. The product had a consistency about it so that every spoonful was as good as the one before.
The taste was not strong but I did enjoy the Wheat and Rice combination, it was rather pleasant rather than amazing. In some respects it reminded me of Corn Flakes but for me with a richer, crunchier and higher quality taste. I could detect a sweeter taste than I expected but it certainly was only a hint or suggestion of it, the flakes were certainly not coated in sugar.
The only thing I did not like as much was when I left the flakes in the milk too long and they became quite soggy and not so tasty. Although at the same time I did feel the flakes did tend to stick in my teeth and I needed a good brushing session afterwards.
I thought the packaging of the product was very good. I liked the fact that inside the box the product was stored in an airtight plastic container. This made the flakes crunchier and clearly fresher. I also liked all the effort they had gone to to provide information about losing weight with the ‘two week challenge’. I must admit I haven’t checked to see if I have lost any weight myself but I do feel healthier although that could be psychological.
I have really enjoyed the experiment with a healthy breakfast that will hope me lose weight at the same time. I found the product tasted great, very crunchy and satisfying and it did keep me satisfied for several hours. The only reservation I have about the product is it’s cost, I do think it is expensive but it does seem to be on offer quite often in Supermarkets and how can you put a price on a Healthier you?

Advantages: Nice taste, easy to eat in the mornings, not fattening Disadvantages: It's a cereal!
Kellogg’s Special K has long been marketed as a healthy eating product, which can help weight loss and assist you not only in fitting in to a skimpy red swim suit, but also in being cellulite and flab free. If the truth be known, it is actually no more or less healthy than other unsweetened cereals, such as cornflakes, rice krispies or bran flakes. However, I don’t choose to eat Special K because it is healthier than other cereals, I eat it because ... ...chore as far as I am concerned. I know that I need to eat it, as I feel hungry if I don’t, and also it is unhealthy to start the day without eating, but I find the majority of breakfast foods uninspiring, and have tried countless different cereals with which I have ultimately become bored!
Special K, however, has been my daily choice for quite a while now and I am still not bored by it. I wouldn’t say it was the nicest food in the world, but as ...

Advantages: tasty, low in fat, lots of vitamins Disadvantages: A box never lasts very long, can go soggy if you dont eat them quick
There are lots of foods that I absolutely love, Cheesecake (calories? only about a million!), Fried Chicken (pure grease) and Philidelphia cream cheese on french bread (none of that light stuff, only the full fat version will do!). Add these foods together and they do not make a healthy low fat diet, so its hardly surprising that my waistline was spreading, and basically, there was more of me than I would have liked.
Now, I'm not good at making ... ...(although I do some). What I needed was to find foods that are good for me, and that I will enjoy. Hmm, no easy task, I'm sure you'll agree, so when my Mum suggested I try Kellogs Special K, I was dubious to say the least. However, there werent many alternatives, so I decided to go for it.
My Special K set me back around £2.50 for 500grams. This seems to be more expensive than alot of the cereals on the shelf, although similar in price to say Crunchy ...

As it is Lent I have decided to give up bread for the duration in an attempt to shed a few pounds. I find this season ideal for me to lose the pounds gained over Christmas as I have that extra incentive to give something up!
So in order to replace my daily Marmite on toast for breakfast I went in search of some interesting cereals – in addition to the normal Rice Krispies, Cornflakes, muesli etc. which are the mainstay of our breakfast cupboard. ... ...the supermarket shelves and decided that perhaps it would be worth a try. I remember my Granddad used to love it when I was a kid! Although I think the flakes have changed shape – they used to look like small squashed Rice Krispies. It seems to have been around for years and is well known as the dieters’ breakfast!
Special K comes in 500g boxes and is another Kellogg’s creation. I paid £2.39 for the mainly white box with a big red Kellogg’s style ...

Advantages: They are good for you. Disadvantages: Poor tasting and do not do as they advertise!
Being an old man now I try to keep myself in shape as best I can so I can see out my time as fit as is possible and perhaps even prolong my time on gods green earth.
One way in which I try to look after myself is to eat healthy and in doing so I like to start my day off with a bowl of cereal and a fruit juice. I have my preferred cereals (they are the rather mundane Cornflakes and Rice crispies) but I do like to try other things.
When her indoors returned from shopping one day sporting a box of Kellogg's SpecialK Sustain I was quick to try them but did not like what I tried at all. The flakes in SpecialK Sustain are made with brown rice and whole-wheat so healthy they most certainly are however tasty which they claim to be they most certainly are not. Even when soaked in milk there is a somewhat boring dryness to this cereal ...
Advantages: calloire and wieght values already work out Disadvantages: a little short on flavor
January is here again and all we have to show for xmas is an increase in the waist measurement and very tight waist bands.
So I have decided on yet another new years diet.
This time I desided to turn to specialK for that little bit of help.
So it was off to the supermarket and into the basket went a packet of Kellogg's SpecialK Sustain Cereal.
My first impression of this product was the price at £2.89 it was at the higher end of the price range on the breakfast cereal isle but Kellogg's is a trusted brand so I decided to go for it.
The taste and quality of the product was good but I must confess to me I would have proffered maybe a little more flavor .
It was a good way to have a easily judged callorie control breakfast with the weight and calorie value already worked out for me on the box.
I must confess that the adds do not ...
