The idea of these bars was great...who doesn’t have a stomach-rumble moment somewhere between breakfast and lunch? Kellogg’s obviously must not have much faith in their cereal if they know that people will need something else to keep them going before lunch time!
Elevenses bars come in chocolate chip and raisin favour. This review is on the chocolate chip Elevenses bars. There used to be a ginger flavour but I haven’t seen it in the shops for a while so I think they must have stopped making them, or maybe my local shop just doesn’t sell them.
They come in six and ‘value’ twelve packs. The six packs cost roughly two pound something, and the value packs about four pounds. Basically, the saving is about 50p in most shops.
The Elevenses bars come in a box, which says ‘Elevenses’ in yellow in a purple circle, with the ‘v’ made to look like hands on a clock. The front has a picture of the cake bar with a bite out, and a picture of a mug of coffee. On the back is has a blurb about the Elevenses range, and on the sides the list of ingredients.
The wrapper of the bars has the same ‘Elevenses’ insignia and a picture of the cake bar. The back has the ingredients and nutritional information.
HOW THE CAKE LOOKS
The cake bar is about 4 inches by 2 and a half inches. It is spongy and a golden brown colour, with chocolate chips in it and has oats covering the top. According to the packaging, each bar weighs 45 grams.
This is the list of ingredients, as stated on the packaging:
The allergy advice given says that it contains milk, soy, wheat, oats and barley. It is suitable for vegetarians.
THE NUTRITIONAL INFORMATION
Each 45g bar contains: Energy = 753kJ/179 kcal Protein=2g Carbohydrates=28 g Of which sugars=16g Starch=1g Fat=6g Of which saturates=1.5g Fibre=1.5g Sodium=0.1g Salt=0.2g
The bars are delicious, with enough chocolate chips for flavour without being too chocolatey, and the sponge isn’t too dense. The oats on the top make it feel healthier than it actually is, but have a habit of coming off when taking it out the packaging. For those trying to eat it at a work desk, this is not a good thing!
I usually have to eat two in one helping, they are very moreish!
DO THEY KEEP YOU FULL?
Only if you have lunch at 12! That is the only downside of the product. They contain so many calories (9% of the daily allowance per bar) and while they are taste they do not keep you full for very long at all.
I know they are only supposed to be a snack between breakfast and lunch, but still as that, if you are having one of those ‘eleven o’clock starvation’ moments, they do not seem to kill it for very long. It might just be that I have a huge appetite, but I would think that by eating two of these bars at elevenish, I should be able to work til about half 1 (when I usually take my lunch break) and not feel distracted by the smell of everyone else cooking their lunch in the microwaves, but it does not hold up to this expectation.
WOULD YOU RECOMMEND IT?
I’m sort of on the fence here. They are delicious, so I suppose I would recommend them as a snack to someone, but I would definitely tell them that they don’t keep you full for long! They might be better at an after-lunch treat instead of a bar of chocolate or bag of crisps.
