When I graduated with my degree in Computing Science, I spent several hours a day applying for jobs in the local newspaper's job section, online, and through local employment agencies.
Kelly Services was one of the first agencies which I registered with. I had initially made contact with them online, and they phoned me to arrange an appointment for a Tuesday afternoon, where I could register in person. During the phone call, the consultant said they already had a temp placement in mind for me, but as it was a very specialist IT position they said I would have to go for an interview with the client company on the Wednesday (which is pretty rare for temp placements - usually you only have to be interviewed by the agency).
I was told what documentation (eg passport, NI number, bank details etc) I would need to bring to the agency when I went for the registration appointment on the Tuesday.
On the day of the registration appointment, the first thing I was asked to do (by the receptionist) was fill in a paper application form, which was about 6 pages long and took nearly half-an-hour! It involved duplicating a lot of the information from my CV, which I thought was a little tedious and unnecessary, considering they already had a copy of my CV.
Once I had completed the form, the consultant met me and led me to a computer where I was asked to take 2 tests - the first was a data entry test, which admittedly was more difficult than the data entry tests I had done at other agencies, as it involved inputting lots of random numbers and letters (not normal words), so you had to keep your eyes on the worksheet whilst typing in order to maintain a good speed. The second test was a simulation of a customer services adviser - where you have to wear headphones and listen to a recording of customers speaking to you on the phone, and key in on the computer what products they want, their credit card number, address etc. I don't really understand why they made me do the second test, as I didn't want a customer services/sales position anyway, but I presume they give the same 2 tests to all candidates.
After completing the tests, the consultants told me my results and said that I had passed both of them, which was a relief. She then took me to a desk and discussed with me the position for which I would be interviewed the next day. She told me everything about how the client company, how the interview would be structured, and how to prepare for it. I then had to sign various contracts and she gave me a timecard, so that if my application was successful I wouldn't have to worry about going back later.
The next day I had the interview with the client company, and the consultant from the agency phoned me at home just a couple of hours later to break the news that I was unsuccessful, but she gave me good feedback. [For anyone who's interested, the client company said that even though I sold myself well, they didn't think I was yet ready for such a senior positon.] Then the consultant said she had another job available with the same company (which isn't quite so senior) and asked whether I would be interested. I said yes. She then said she will call the company and ask when I can start. She called back just 10 minutes later and said I could start the next day!! I was delighted!
The consultants at the agency were aways friendly - sometimes if I was allowed to leave off work early enough on a Friday, I would walk to the agency branch to hand in my timecard, and the staff always recognised me by name and asked if everything was OK. (As the agency closes at 5pm every day, sometimes I didn't make it on time, so then I would just put the timecard through their letterbox. It doesn't have to be in until 9am the following Monday anway).
Five months later, I am still in the same position, and I have learnt a lot from this role, and have developed within it. As of tomorrow, I will become a permanent employee of the client company, so I am really pleased!
Other than the long application form to join the agency, the only other disadvantage I can think of is that the opening hours are limited to standard 9-5 office hours, which is awkward if you yourself are working 9-5, as the branch is closed on Saturdays. I believe that in some other towns/cities, they have longer opening hours. Also, they don't send you blank timecards through the post with your payslip; it is your responsibility to pick one up.

...dollar. Unless you temp for Kelly Services that is! I signed up with the Bristol Branch of Kelly to find myself temporary work whilst I was looking for full time employment since finishing my degree. In all fairness the day after they interviewed me they had offered me a job. Not a great job mind but I grew to like it and stayed for a total of three months. This is where it gets complicated…

After two weeks the company in question asked me to stay on doing different work for more money and back-dating my pay rise to when I first started. I agreed. They were happy. I was happy. Manpower were happy. Kelly should also have been happy. For some reason it didn’t work like that.
When my pay increase first didn’t go through I asked my boss about it. She spoke to her ...

Advantages: None Disadvantages: They don't put themselves out
Kelly's Services are the worst agency I have ever come across. The Staff
are rude and they do not listen to what you are looking for.I'm speaking
from experience as a mother of a seventeen year old desperately looking
for work.
My son contacted Kellys and informed them he did not have very much
experience in warehousing but was willing to learn.
He also informed them that as we live in the Country, our bus service
is not great. This made it ... ...not to put forward certain towns.
He made an appointment to go in an register and they kept him there
waiting over an hour before they registered him which also took another
hour getting down all his details.
They told him they would call him within a couple of days.
They did call and offered him a job in a town which he had informed
them he could not get to.
Kellys response was to shout down the phone - oh. great and slammed
the phone down ...

...was I! Kelly asked me to go to their offices to do some tests, talk about jobs and fill in forms. So along I went and I seemed quite hopeful that they would find me some employment in the coming weeks. Even thought they had told me that all their scientific work is to the north of london and I may have to move, just weeks after moving here in the first place. Also the jobs they offer have a starting salary of ten thousand a year, How are you supposed ... ...them I waited and waited and waited, eventually six months after joining they contacting me with a very unsuitable post. By this point I was already employed elsewhere by a much more efficient company who listened to my needs and experience.
They were the worst agency I delt with down in London, and still ring me up with messages on my phone even though I signed off their books in december! ...

Advantages: Not too much time to employment, half decent pay Disadvantages: Rude employees, not getting the right type of employment, confusion
Kelly services is an employment agency that is supposed to be good for finding people work. I found that they merely just use people, and the companies they often employ with treat many of their employees like dirt. That's not to say I am a naive person and did not expect SOMETHING, but what happened to me came more or less out of the blue.
I had to come in about three times to take various tests which did take awhile and was quite frustrating, ... ...a shock. The woman from Kelly services, who at the time I did not even recognize asked to speak with me and told me to finish my call. Then, she made me take my bare belongings in a very rude manner (note: ETS had let us take our testing booklets home, this actually was not necessary) and escorted me out the door while I was still completely confused. She spoke of all these things; that I didn't want to take calls, had complained about physical therapy ...

Quick review of Kelly Services
I recently have finished a temp position at Kelly Services.
They first start off really nice and friendly but then when you want help from them they do not want to know!
They messed up my pay completly and told me it was my mistake! which is a total lie as i went into the office in person and handed in my timesheets!
I had to contact head office to resolve this matter!
They do not respond to emails or phone calls.
I will NEVER work for them again!!
Employment wise they try to put you forward for jobs of no intrest to you at all and if they do find something you might like it is totally out of area! ...

Advantages: They really work on your behalf if you have a good history Disadvantages: They can completely ignore you when they want to
In my career I've had various dealings with recruitment consultancies/agencies over the years in varying capacities, as a young woman unsure of what career path to take who decided temping would help make a decision. This is a very long review, so you might want to jump down to the last few paragraphs if you just want to read my tips about dealing with agencies.
IN THE BEGINNING?
I've had experience of using recruitment agencies since the late 80s when I started temporary work quite by accident and then ended up continuing with temporary assignments for about 5 years. I worked, at the time, for Kelly Temporary Services which was later renamed KellyServices. I found them to be very loyal and efficient and extremely helpful. When I first registered with them, I had to take typing tests and a literacy and numeracy test (which I did ...
name don't just deal with accounting positions), Adecco, Randtstad, Manpower, KellyServices, Securicor, Recruitment Solutions, to name a few, all of whom deal with a wide range of both temporary and permanent positions.
Some also have websites where you can search jobs on-line and register your CV with them. If you are looking primarily for 'temp' work, don't discard the local agencies, we have one in Swansea known as Action Recruitment who have been around for many years and are well known by the local companies, big and small. DO NOT BE AFRAID TO REGISTER WITH MORE THAN ONE AGENCY, YOU ARE NOT RESTRICTED BY AN EXCLUSIVETY CLAUSE.
PAY?
The question on everyones lips, the salary you see advertised in the agency for both permanent and temporary jobs are WISIWYG - "what you see is what you get!" Agencies earn their money through ...
Advantages: Good pay for my age, meet lots of new people, not to stressful Disadvantages: Don't think there is any, I love it!
until September. In September I was hoping to added college to do a BTEC in E-media. I came across this job on the machine. It sounded okay so I printed it out and took it to the lady in the job Centre along with many more print outs! The salary was £10950, which was amazing to say I'd only been on £3.82 an hour. And also it was only 35 hours a week. The actual working hours are
Mon, Tues, Thurs and Fri - 9am-5pm
Wed - 9.30-5pm
And the job also includes some Saturdays working from 9am-12noon.
I phoned the number on the sheet and spoke to Jo. She was lovely. Really kind and helpful. She worked for Kellyservices, which is an agency that is paid to recruit people for companies. She told me a little bit more about the job, which sounded good. I arranged to meet her the following day.
She taught me lots of interviewing techniques ...
