Due to a massive amount of glare cast on to my desk area at work, I've had to have one of these screen filters fitted to reduce that glare as it was beginning to give a pretty large amount of eye strain. The Kensington screen filters are available to fit most monitor sizes, and, to be fair, they are inconspicuous, and after a short while they are an almost un-noticed part of the furniture.
The usefullness of these filters is bound to vary depending on the position and the conditions your monitor is in, in my case these are not great. Once I'd fitted the screen filter there was an immediate difference - the glare HAD gone. However, I couldn't see much of the screen at all, it had gone so dark that even turning the screen brightness up slightly made not a jot of difference!
I came to realise after a while that there was one main problem causing this; the nature of what was on the screen, as most of my work revolves around draughting in Autocad, and the preferred working background is black, the filter takes out all of the possible glare and darkens the screen, which means everything else semi-dark on the screen becomes quite lost within this black background.
After having done some work in word (white working background), the screen filter was far more useful. So, if you use mainly word processing programs, or frequently work with programs running in a light background, the filter will darken that background a little, but a brightness and contrast tweak can resolve this. However, if you are under darker conditions in your programs, you may want to seek further advice on a higher priced screen filter which can cope with a darker image. If not, the dark on dark outcome is liable to give you splitting headaches and make you squint frequently to see the screen, a problem I have gotten used to (and now it's my home computer that seems weird!) but may be resolved with a more up-market monitor.
The filter is easily fitted, with velcro one side and sticky surface on the other strips provided to stick it on to the monitor simply and securely. They are thin and un-noticeable, and also have a crocodile clip wire that you can clip to a metal surface to ground the filter to prevent it giving any shocks. It can be cleaned with monitor wipes but is adviseable to wipe dry with a smooth duster or similar afterwards to prevent marking. It's an all round decent buy and can be found for under £30 from all good computer / computer accessory suppliers.
www.easyetrader.com have stocked it for under this price in the past, as have www.dcsplc.co.uk

Product Information for "Kensington GlareMaster for 16" - 17" - display screen filter" »
Manufacturer's product description
Kensington's GlareMaster screen filter helps relieve eyestrain by eliminating 99.9% of the glare coming from your computer monitor. And it does so without compromising colors or brightness. The image is always true, never distorted. It's the low-maintenance screen filter that doesn't demand a lot of special attention. It is durable, hard coating is not damaged by common household cleaners, requires fewer wipe-downs; conductive coatings work with a grounding wire to drain away dust-attracting static electricity. The filter is intended for 16" to 17" monitors.
