But, in preventing simple removing the laptop whilst no one is looking, it does this task well. Some things are just overlooked...

Advantages: Good quality, feels secure
Disadvantages: It doesn't do much, but its not supposed to

I'm off to uni in october, and i'm going to be taking my laptop. I know you don't really think about it, but how many people are actually concerned about having things stolen from their rooms whilst at uni? Probably the most expensive item in there that will appeal to burglars will be the laptop. All laptops are built with a "Kensington Security Slot" already. Many people don't know it exists. Other people just think of it as a small hole in the side of the laptop. This hole can be the difference between having a laptop after returning from some place and not having a laptop. Review of Kensington Slim MicroSaver Security cable

The most security you can get in a genuinely usable lock

Advantages: Really secure, not too small, not too heavy
Disadvantages: Too small for locking to general street furniture - Mounting bracket is a joke.

This is about the most secure lock you can use on your bike. It's just about long and wide enough to attach to most official bike posts and railings whilst still being small enough to make opening it with a car jack problematic. It's highly resistant to cutting tools, sufficient that cutting the post the bike is attached to would be the better option. It is a bit heavy, perhaps heavier than most locks of this size but still an easy carry in a back-pack. The weight can easily overwhelm the mounting bracket though so if you're going to jump kerbs or hit big potholes then don't use it. Removing the part of the bracket that attaches to the lock also makes it easier to fit through tight spaces. Size is everything though and the trade-off here is that making it small enough to be secure means that quite a bit of street furniture is too wide ...
