It is probably not the best time of year to review an ice cream maker given the dark, wet cold days that we still have to endure but I like to think about better weather to help me get through the horrible winter months and making ice cream is one such thing. The great thing about this ice cream maker from Kenwood is the price, I paid £26.99 for it and compared with some other ones on the market that is a pretty good price.
The ice cream maker has a 1.1 liter capacity and weighs just under 3kg. It is important to remember that that capacity is the finished volume and the process of making ice cream does add volume to the base mixture that you add so my advice is to only half fill the mixing bowl each time as if you add too much it cannot cope and could also get messy. It can be used to make either ice cream or the more healthy frozen yoghurt, I have made both and it works equally well which ever option you go with. In order to make ice cream you have to plan ahead a little as the mixing bowl needs to be placed in the freezer 24 hours before you want to make the ice cream. Once you have made your base you simply pour it into the mixing bowl and then switch it on and the machine will begin to do the churning for you. It take about half an hour and a maximum of 45 minutes depending on the quantities and then it is ready to be transferred to your storage containers.
The great thing about making ice cream at home is that you have control over what goes into it so it can be a lot healthier and free from preservatives and this was the main reason that I bought it rather than to try and save money. I have loved experimenting with different flavour options and I have particularly enjoyed the frozen yoghurts that I have made and I have now pretty much perfected a lemon yoghurt which is so refreshing when the temperature rises. It is really easy to clean as the parts are dish washer compatible however I do tend to clean such appliances by hand. It has proven reliable and a good purchase in my opinion.
The great advantage about this machine is that it is very simple and does the final tricky labour intensive part of the process for you, the only real downside is remembering to freeze the bowl so you have to plan ahead which makes spontaneous ice cream making not an option. Still that is when Mr Whippy comes to the rescue.
