Although that may seem like a very small difference for such a difference in price, for me, it is well worth it. When baking or mixing something for large quantities the Major gives me the capacity that the Chef would struggle with.
As with the Chef, the Kenwood Major is a very high quality appliance. With the flexibility of being able to attach the most amazing attachments, from sausage makers to food processors the Major flexes its dynamism. This is a very robust machine that in my experience does not scratch easily. If you are toying up whether to get a Kenwood over another brand I would suggest the Kenwood for a number of reasons. Kenwood have been making these for decades and that has to count for something. The experience Kenwood has gives them an excellent reputation and rightly so. The build quality of these are tremendous, second to no other brand I have come across so far. I believe that Kenwood will continue to make these for decades to come giving you the piece of mind that you will be able to replace parts for the foreseeable future. I also think that the design of these is much more neutral and classic, making them fit into pretty much any design of kitchen unlike the very style-focused other mixers available on the market.
The Major I bought came with a blender and a food processor which have proven very useful additions to this product.
The only qualm I have had with this mixer in terms of the product so far is that my wife managed to snap the lid off the funnel on the bowl cover with very little effort. This is of course replaceable if need be. Another weakness is that they are quite expensive but I think the price is justified in the expected life span I would give it.
So, if you need a food mixer, I advice you choose a Kenwood. If you need one that will have the capability to mix large amounts without flinging flour or ingredients everywhere then choose the Major over the Chef.
Advantages: rugged and powerful, big capacity. Disadvantages: need to stop mixing and scrap bowl sides to ensure thorough mix.
...years I have used the Kenwood to mix 2 - 3 loaves of bread, which is heavy work. I have not had any problems, in fact, I love using this machine. It is much quieter than then older Kenwoods and more power than you could ever want. The mixer will stay put when mixing a single loaf, but tends to 'walk' around the benchtop when mixing a double loaf., so watch it. The only problem with this type of planetary mixer (kitchenaid is also a planetary mixer) ... ...try and overcome this problem Kenwood have introduced a rubber coated mixing paddle which is designed to scrap the sides of the mixing bowl as it goes. My experience is that this is an improvement but certainly not perfect. The Sunbeam Mixer from Australia is much easier to use in this respect as you can easily scrape the mixing bowl while it mixes. However, for bread, think the Kenwood is a better system. ...
