...Before talking about this Kenwoodricecooker, I would like to talk about cooking rice from an eastern perspective.
Growing up in the Far East, it is hard for me to imagine why a lot of western people boil rice in large quantity of water and throw the water away (I know rice is cooked differently in places like Italy or Spain but I'm not going into that). Our mothers always told us that by doing the above, all the flavour and nutrients are gone with the water AND it is more likely to have rice porridge than proper rice. After living in England for many years, I realised that this may be because people here prefer long grain rice, which does not have as much starch coming out during boiling. Advantages: little fuss, easy prep, tenderises tough meat, very versatile Disadvantages: not cool wall, requires a small amount of advance planning
..., and high so I can adjust the heat to meet my time of desired cooking. A generous 6.5 litre size, I knew that I could comfortably fit in a whole chicken for roasting as well as potatoes and carrots and what not for Sunday tea and after plonking the food in and turning it on, I could relax knowing dinner was doing itself. I also knew that I could double my usual recipes for casseroles, soups, and stews for freezing portions to be used as “ready meals” on busy days, as well as for when guests were arriving s there would be extras for dinner.
I have indeed found this to be the case. This past Christmas I had the most stress free Christmas dinner ever thanks to two rather nifty gadgets: this slow cooker and a Kenwood Chef (which I have also reviewed)! This is a really good rice and steamer combo Cooker.
It cooks quickly and effieciently, had a few teething problems at first, kept burning the rice :S put in the amount of water it suggested but it just wasn't enough. But once there is enough it makes more
