Kenwood SJM270 Kettle

I'll start off by saying that this is likely to be a pretty boring review!!
It's a kettle for goodness sake - and don't we just take them for granted!!

The kettle is probably my least used kitchen appliance now.
My family are predominantly coffee drinkers (a cup of tea has not passed my lips for 38 years!!) and since I purchased my indispensable Senseo Coffee Machine it is VERY rare that I make a cup of instant coffee.

But, of course, I do need a kettle for other things apart from tea and coffee and when my old one went to the big kettle skip in the sky I needed to go and look for a new one.

My previous kettle had been brushed stainless steel, and to be honest I wasn't that keen, I found that it took a fair bit of cleaning to keep it looking decent.

It is twelve months now since Kenwood Kettle came to live with us, when I bought him from Comet I paid £19.99, the price does seem to have increased a little now - but shopping around it seems to vary from £18 - £27, so a little Googling is needed before going out to purchase one.

I have never owned a Kenwood kettle before but I am very loyal to the Kenwood brand with mixers, blenders and liquidisers, so I did feel confident purchasing this appliance and it came with two years warranty. an offer from Comet.

I was a little concerned as to the weight of the box as we took it home, yes that would mean that it was a robust kettle, but I do have some problems with my right wrist and was concerned that it may be rather heavy to lift when full of water.
However on opening the box it was evident that the majority of the weight was in the base, the kettle itself was reasonably light.

I was very pleased with the appearance of Kenwood Kettle; it looks very sturdy but it is also sleek and stylish. It is made of polished stainless steel that looks really good quality. The handle, base and lid handle are all in strong black plastic. I was pleased to find that the strong handle is also ergonomically designed, a big advantage for my wonky wrist and me!!
The heavy base contains a really handy safety feature, on the bottom there is a cord rewind so any unused cord can be stored away. I find this particularly handy as my present kitchen is fairly small and excess and dangling cord is a real danger blemish on the whole kettle.

The instruction leaflet provided in the box recommended, as is usual, that you boil water in the kettle for three times before using
It was while doing this I realised that this was a good, fast boiling kettle. The capacity of the kettle is 1.7 litres, and with the kettle full it took around 40 seconds to boil - probably down to the 3000-Watts power.
It wasn't an over noisy kettle while it was boiling.

The kettle is extremely easy to use - well let's face it - it's just a kettle. It can be filled from the lift off lid or the wide spout, and then it is just a case of placing it on the base, pressing the bottom under the handle. When the water is boiling a blue light flashes.

ARE THERE ANY SPECIFIC FEATURES?

As I said earlier there is the cord rewind in the base and it is a hefty 3000-Watt kettle, apart from this there is a 'no boil over' feature; basically the kettle detects if there is insufficient water in it and automatically switches off.

The spout also has a built in filter, which is for removing lime scale from the water if you live in a hard water area. As we do not live in a hard water area I cannot really comment on this facility.

DURABILITY

I have had the kettle for a year and had no problems with it. It does come across as a very sturdy appliance. The base is not all plastic but has some metal in it made. The base is mostly made of metal and some plastic. The handles and the buttons are all strong and durable.

DISADVANTAGES

One small disadvantage is that my husband (with larger fingers) doesn't find that there is a lot of room to put his fingers under the handle. This could be an excuse to keep him pout of the kitchen!!!!

The details from Kenwood for this kettle are:

· Size (cm): 24L x 20W x 12H
· Wattage: 3kW
· Material : Stainless Steel
· Colour: Polished Stainless Steel
· Guarantee: 1 Year
· Weight: 1.3kg

· Filter: Removable
· Cord Storage: Yes
· Concealed Element: Yes
· 360 Degree Base: Yes
· Stealth: No
· Illuminated On/Off Switch: No

CONCLUSION

Overall this is a decent kettle. It boils really quickly, seems very durable, is very attractive to look at and takes up a small amount of my valued kitchen space.
There are cheaper kettles on the market, but there are a lot more expensive too.
I would recommend Kenwood Kettle!!

Kenwood Kettle is a cherished member of the family!!
