Advantages: Practical, reliable, comfortable, handling, durable. Disadvantages: Avoid high milers. Head gasket problem associated with high miles.
An excellent all-rounder. Mine was a 1993 K Furio 1.8i bought with 120,000 miles on it. Very comfortable and practical. The engine boiled about 6,000 miles later and had to be replaced with a recon engine due to the head gasket blowing. Everything was fine after that. It was probably the best handling car I have ever driven due to the fact that I span on a main road at a high speed and managed to regain control without damaging anything!!!! ZX' s rarely rust and benefit from cheap Peugeot parts. Compare this to a similar aged tatty Fiesta or Corsa this is a great buy if you can find them! Avoid high-milers like the plague. Running costs are average. A great used buy if you can find a genuine low-mileage reasonably priced example. Also get a later model with an immobiliser. I got about 40mpg.
I would avoid the 1.8i automatic as that ...

Advantages: Economical to run and cheap to buy. Fairly fast. Good engine. Reliable. "Biodiesel ready". Disadvantages: A little noisy. Not fashionable.
~ Why I bought the 1.9TD Citroen ZX ~
I bought this car because I do over 20,000 miles a year, and thought that I could save a fair bit of money by switching from a Petrol to a Diesel. I posted on a forum of car enthusiasts, asking what I should go for. I said I had £750 to spend on a Diesel and wanted reliability and economy above all else.
The responses were all on the same lines: buy a Peugeot 306 with an XUD9 engine, or a Citroen ZX with the same engine.
I bought a Citroen ZX in the end because it was cheaper than buying a Peugeot - the Citroens don't look anywhere near as good, and are therefore less sought after.
~ How much did I pay? ~
I paid about £700 for my Citroen ZX with 100k on the clock. This was a bit over the going rate, but I'd called up several other adverts for cheaper cars first, and they had all gone ...

I owned the top of the range ZX Volcane for 3 and a half years, and it was a very comfortable and competant car. I previously owned a Citroes AX GT, and found that a lot more fun.
The ZX was a bit slow taking off from the traffic lights, but had wonderful mid range pulling power - you zoomed past those other mid size saloons! Where it really came into its own was on a motoring holiday in Ireland. It was a car for the open road, handling and ride was superb and fuel economy very good too - getting almost 40mpg! Cruised well on the motorways too, of course..
However, I used it mainly for short hops to and from work and to be honest, it was not a great car for that. Expensive exhaust has to be replaced after 2 years - mainly due to the town driving and the engine not getting a chance to warm up. It lacked fun and was a slightly dull ...
