You can buy Kiddiproof door locks from most DIY stores, we bought our from Do It All. They have stopped my niece causing havoc in the kitchen.
I would say that they as a safety device they are excellent, since our niece is quite small and young yet they work really well. But, I don’t know how effective they would be for a seven or eight year old who could open the locks.
When our niece stays over it can be a bit of a nightmare. We love her but the problem is that in the kitchen she can reach the bottom cupboards draws. We’ve had food on the floor, drink spilled and many more problems.
What caused us more concern and worry was that the sink unit contains all the cleaning products some of which are quite dangerous if sprayed into eyes. So, my Mum decided to get some Kiddiproof door locks.

The kiddiproof locks can be used all around the house. We’ve had some fitted in the kitchen, the medicine cabinet, the garage where all the gardening tools are kept and quite a few other places.
You get two locks per box so we’ve bought three or four boxes for use all over the house. You get most of the equipment except the drill of course in the box.

They cost £4.60 a box for two locks which is good value. The locks are strong and we’ve had them for a couple of months and they have worked really well.
Advantages: Keeps your children safe Disadvantages: Takes a while to getting use to where the key has to be placed against the door
When we got our kitchen refurbished our little girls were playing on our minds if they got into any of the cupboards and got access to household chemicals or any potential hazards. So we get in contact with M.F.I. (the supplier of our kitchen) to see if they supplied any locks for our kitchen cupboards. They had a patented magnetic lock system called safe-fix.
The best thing about this locking device is that they are invisible so it doesn’t ruin ... ...easy fitted by drilling a hole into the back of the door (only three quarters the way through) and inserting the lock onto the back of the door and then fixed. To open the lock is quite fantastic you have a unit, which is called a key that has a magnet fitted inside which releases the lock when the unit is put against the door (and springs back when the key has been removed) where the lock has been fitted. The only downfall these locks have is that ...

Advantages: easy for an adult to use but not a child, cheap Disadvantages: not entirely foolproof
Kiddiproof have a really good range of products to protect your children. I bought some of their cupboard locks from B&Q, have used these in the kitchen to lock away all the cleaning solutions. These are easy for an adult to open but virtually impossible for a young child, you have to hold in a button on the side and one on top to release the catch. For a childs smaller hand they would find this very very difficult. These can be used on corner cupboards ...
