The SLC/Now! is a daughter-card upgrade that replaces the 80286 microprocessor in your IBM PS/2 Models 25-286, 30-286, 50, 50z, and 60 with a 386SLC or 486SLC2 processor. There are three models of upgrades to meet every computing need: 386SLC-20 (20 MHz), 386SLC-25 (25 MHz), and 486SLC2-50 (50 MHz). Designed by IBM for 100% compatibility, the SLC/Now! provides power and performance for today's most demanding software applications and graphics-based operating systems. Advantages: Easy Overclock To 3200+ And So Cheap Disadvantages: None
...Based on my experience the 2500+ is an easy overclock to 3200+
You need a motherboard capable of 200 Mhz FSB such as one based on the NForce2 chipset. I am using an ASUS A7N8X-X which costs circa £50 to £60
Simply choose 200 Mhz FSB instead of 166 Mhz FSB for rock solid performance. Keeps very cool (circa 50 degrees under full load, 43 degrees otherwise) and despite the overclock is very stable.
All this with the standard OEM heatsink, no special cooling required.
One advantage of the ASUS motherboard is that you can increase the FSB by 1Mhz increments. I have had this at 208 Mhz with no problems.
The muliplier is of course locked on these chips. If you want an unlocked version go for the mobile 2500+ and you can get even higher speeds....

Advantages: Good Make, Good Value Disadvantages: None, Its memory.
...At the end of the day memory is memory, whether it is a generic brand or Kingston or Crucial isn't really going to affect things that much.
However when choosing your memory be aware of what kind of memory it is you are choosing.
The first thing is MB - MegaByte. This could be 128, 256, 512 and so on the more Megabyte you have the quicker your system should run.
As this is 256MB you have a good size for running normal everyday tools such as Outlook, Internet and Word.
However if you are into CAD drawing, using your PC as server or intense games you might want to look at 512MB.
The next thing is memory speed. In this case it is 333mhz (PC2700).
It could be 266mhz or 400mhz. Obviouslt the higher the better. However in order to really utilise this you need to have a processor that has a front side bus of the same or faster...

Advantages: Plenty of Scope for improvement Disadvantages: You can't get one for a P.C. - shame
...In recent trials the Motorola G4 Processor for Mac (running at 450 Mhz) out performed a P.C.
running 2 thats....... TWO 1Gig Mhz Pentium III processors. I don't understand why P.C. owners are son fixated with Mhz - I suppose they need to run DOS so that Windows will RUN or is that crawl.

CISC - Complex Instruction Set Computing
= 30 - 40 time more code to process than an equivelent RISC Processor
Reduced Instruction Set Computing
Go Figure
And 1 Gig Mhz is coming soon.
PC are going to need Liquid Nitrogen Cooled Processors Just to Keep Up
If they Can...

When my amd 64 3200+ was geting a little hot using the stock fan i decided to look for a new, but cheap, alternative.
This fan will fit on any motherboard that supports skt 939, skt 940 and socket 754 type AMD processors. But i have read even though... more
This year, Santa brought me my first digi-cam (see review). I was chuffed to bits, and was soon snapping away at anything that moved, and often things that didnt!

Having been searchng for a decent brand USB pen drive, which was reliable and small,i opted for this one as it was Kingston and 1 GB was enough storage.
At prices from £10 for a massive 1GB drive this was a bargain especially since it is a good brand... more
