Forget it, they just upped all thier charges - the karoo extra has gone up by £10 to £25 a month, full unmetered access 24/7 is £29.99 !
I used to put up with the poor service because at £15 a month i'd forgive it but for £25 they are really taking the ****.

Advantages: cheap access Disadvantages: disconnection and slow
I have used Karoo Xtra twice in last year and each time I have been dissapointed. For a start why do they give you such ridiculous passwords. I lost my settings once and had problems with my computer remembering my password. Each time I wanted to log on I had to type in this silly password that consists of about 16 numbers and letters.
Each time I had to contact the helpdesk I have not been impressed with the service that I have recieved from them. ... ...a screen and if you give them a query that they have no answer to they tell you they will have to ring you back. Fine, apart from it took them 4 days to contact me, and in the meantime I had to connect to the Internet using a 3p a minute ISP.
I suppose the fact that the full call only costs you 5.5p is a bonus but with so many companies now offering free access for a monthly fee i am very surprised that there prices have stayed the same for so long.

Advantages: not much anymore Disadvantages: everything now
...Signed up last year with kingston Communications for their ISP Karoo Extra, we had to pay for one years service up front which was'nt a problem, the price then was £169. or there abouts this was for unlimited access we just pay for the telephone call which is 5p for however long we are on line for, that is when we can get on line.
On the daytime it is fine we get connected straight away and things run really smooth and pretty fast but come the weekends ... ...massive increase down to is greed, Kingston communications appear to have the monopoly here in Hull being the only communications company we have.
So if anyone after reading this can recommend any cheaper deals than this I would really appreciate it if you could let me know of them. ...

There have been e-mails from custmer services recently about looking at improving the service in light of the advent of freephone isp's, and so i'm sticking with them for now but if something doesn't change soon i will be looking elsewhere. ...

Review of Kingston Communications
Advantages: Low cost access Disadvantages: Connection problems can make it a pain
Karoo Xtra is a good service. For 5.5p per call, you get seven hours access to the internet. That is, of course, you can stay connected for seven hours.
Yes, there are problems, dropped carriers, failed connections and other anomalies, all of which mean redialling and paying another 5.5p. But, at present, with so many ISP's having problems (free call services disappearing), it is still a relatively good proposition.
You get access to newsgroups, ... ...technical support for your money. Which, all in all, isn't a bad deal.
The tech support team can be a pain to get through, but, usually, when you do reach them, they are helpful. They can take a few minutes to guage your experience of Windows, but, once they do, I find them to be able to talk to you on a level that doesn't entirely patronise.
The monthly subscription of £15.99 is taken by direct debit and is definitely worth paying, in addition ...

Advantages: Cheap, easy, you feel as if you are part of a local community Disadvantages: Disconnection occasionally problematic, high monthly charge
Kingston Communications, Hull's very own telephone company, began offering virtually free calls with a subscription charge long before any other free call offers came about. They were ground breaking, and are still impressive.
Originally, Karoo was £10 a month, with call charges ranging from 1p a minute to 4p a minute, depending upon the time of day. That was then changed, so that you could continue paying for calls and only pay £5 a month, or instead ... ...irrespective of the time spent online.
This was done using Hull's 01482 STD, which is the cheapest in the country. No matter how long you are on the phone for, a local call in Hull costs just 5p (or 5.5p, as it is now). Why the superb service doesn't attract more national attention is probably due to the immense Southern bias of the media, but up here, we absolutely love it.
Consequently, as a heavy user of the internet, I switched to the 5p unmetered ...
