Oh, this is a godsend. It really is.
It's hard sometimes to say how good stuff is compared to other similar stuff, they do the same thing and there aint much between them. You can't really have a *my memory stick is better than yours* argument. Thanks to the amazingly clever idea of popping a card reader onto a memory stick I can honestly say, that in the 4 days i've had this, it is definitely better. Already used its full functionality a good 4 or 5 times and been impressed. And only £17 on Amazon!
There again, it is just what I need and not everyone would. If, like me you need to use the digi camera a lot in a week and have a laptop that you need to cart everywhere this really does a good job of cutting down the clutter.
It can hold SD, SDHC, MMC, MMCplus, according to the blurb, but like most people I use the SD most often. Without a card reader on my laptop I normally have to carry an external reader around but now it just pops into my pocket and off I go. You can buy an adapter which will allow you to use a few other cards as well. Now I can download the photos at work without having to take the camera home or fiddle with leads.
The memory stick has 2gig onboard ram, plenty for most people. There is a 1 gig version for £8 on amazon and I think there is a 4gig as well. You would think that perhaps this would start getting a bit bulky with the reader as well but its still only just over 6cm by about 3cm. I've got a 128mb crucial stick which isn't much smaller.
A panel lifts up on the top on a little hinge and the card is popped in to the revealed slot. I think the beauty is that you can close the lid again, keeping your SD card safe and snug in its own little house until you get it back in the camera again.
Transfer speed is usb2.0 but obviously back-compatible to 1.1. Build quality is fair enough, not polished chrome but seems decent.
