Kingston, being a very reputable computer memory producer, was the main attraction for me in deciding to choose this USB memory stick - coupled with the fact that this stick is extremely attractively priced and has a more than acceptable storage capacity for everyday usage.
I have had three USB sticks to date, the first is a few years old now and it hasn't failed me yet but I outgrew the storage capacity at 128MB. The second is twice the size and only about a year old - I've had trouble with this one, files becoming corrupt, files disappearing. Its a no-named brand cheap USB stick and that’s when I decided to stick with a known brand.
Step in the Kingston 1GB DataTraveler. I wanted security and reliability and so far the Kingston has stood the test. It comes in white only, and when data is being written to/from the stick a green light comes on to show its working - and that it shouldn't be removed.
In the same way as the other USB stick's I've used - it plugs into the USB socket and is recognised by Windows XP straight away. Speed can't really be commented on - the data transfer rate is governed by the speed of your USB socket (USB 1 is slower than USB 2, which most modern computers come with anyway, and the Kingston will support). The main thing to remember is to 'stop' the USB device before physically removing it from the machine so you don't loose any data. This is done in windows by clicking the USB device icon (grey box with a green arrow) in the system tray - bottom right hand side of the screen. It will give you the option to 'eject', 'stop' or 'remove' the device.
The DataTraveler comes with a warranty but I very much doubt you will need to use it. This is in addition to the user manual - the USB stick is so easy to use, its 'plug and play' as they say :) you're unlikely to have to refer to it. But its there, and its useful, all the same.
A big advantage is the capacity for storage - 1GB is a good size, more than enough for my portable applications, photos, documents, CV etc etc. Although I can see that if you use the drive for music, videos or photos - this will diminish fairly quickly. If you're in that market look for a larger capacity drive or possibly at external USB hard drives.
Unlike the other memory sticks I've owned it feels very well built and certainly doesn't feel like its going to break. What I've found to be quite a noticeable point with these things - the cap fits really well and doesn't fall off!
Overall I think this is an excellent little memory stick for everyday office / document portable storage, its reliable and very well made by a reputable company.
