I was recently preparing a presentation at work for a client and their request was that we transferred it to a flash drive (or memory pen as my boss calls them!)
Following a quick call to our IT department a Kingston DataTraveler USB flash drive soon arrived on my desk.

For those who have never seen one, flash drives are a modern alternative to the ancient technology of floppy disks. You can easily transfers file to and from it and it is reusable unlike storing stuff on CD.

The Kingston DataTraveler that I have is white in colour with a green tag on it which gives the name and the memory size. It's approximately 6.5cm in length and less than a centimetre in width so the downside is that it can be easily lost, although it does come with a hole at one end where you would be able to hook it to a key ring or neck tag. It has a little white cap which when removed reveals the USB plug.
You just plug it into a USB port and send to it whatever information you want (it usually comes up as a "Removable Disk" in your explorer). You know its working as a little light flashes on it during data transfer.
Some flash drives require software installation but if you have Windows XP then this one doesn't which makes it quick and easy to use. The downside to this is that there is no security and if you lost the flash drive then anyone could access your documents.
The one I have is the 256mb version but you can get them in all kinds of memory size (from 128mb to a wopping 4gb).
I can't say how much the one I have cost as it was supplied by the company but from my research they appear to cost around £5 upwards depending on the memory size.
They are readily available, places like Comet and Currys will always have flash drives in stock but even places like Boots and W H Smith have started selling them. Of course if you want a bargain then I would suggest having a search on the internet.
I would definitely recommend the DataTraveler for cheap, temporary storage of unsensitive documents or photos.

Review of Kingston DataTraveler USB flash drive - 256 MB
Advantages: Easy to carry around, established quality brand name Disadvantages: Lid can be easily broken if carry strap attached
...available for download from the Kingston website for Windows 98.
Is It Any Good?
Short answer-yes. This is a fast drive, which works on the USB2 format, but is backwards compatible with older USB standards. One of the plus points I have noted in use are that, unlike some generic sticks, the name "Kingston" shows alongside the drive letter it has been assigned in the explorer window. This is handy when I am at work and have a number of network drives ... ...been damaged or corrupted. Kingston has a good reputation for producing quality memory, and the performance of this stick has reinforced my positive opinion of this brand. Other capacities are available to suit individual needs. Overall, I give this an 8.5 out of 10
I would say there is a place for cheap, generic manufacturers, but if you want to transfer valuable data around, you do need to buy an established named product such as kingston or corsair. ...
