"Kingston Jamaica? Hull? Thames? Nah SD cards! .."

. .
These are 2 gb SD memory cards made by Kingston, SD being short for Secure Digital, and I can't believe there has not been a review already done. I have just tried to get onto their website, but to no avail, will try later.

These cards are a solid state storage system for information, it is as simple as that

The price is competitive, expect to pay up to £16, and you can get them for less from various companies on the internet., Remember this is excluding P&P of course. You can buy them on the high street, but at a higher price. These are often described as the "Postage stamp" size cards. The size is one inch by three quarters, or 19 x 24mm.

You also have the option of going for non-branded merchandise, although I would not advise anything but the original stuff in my own camera. You are then safe in the knowledge that you will have the genuine item, and the warranty is valid.

There are 2 types of these cards, M and H type. They have a different method of digitally encoding, but that does not concern us, because they are completely interchangable and compatable.

The transfer rate on these cards is about 5mb per second. They came ready to use and you don't need to format them at first ,like you have to do with the TOMTOM.

These cards were jointly developed by Fujifilm and Olympus. It is a shame they aren't some vivid colour like hi-vis yellow, because if you drop one of these cards outdoors, you may never find it again. They do come in a handy case, which is easy enough to keep in the same place as your camera, one tip here is to make the case easy to see, although the time you are at risk of losing one is when you are changing it.

You will probably want to keep several of these cards with you, instead of just the one, that way when the card is full, it is easy enough to change cards and start snapping away again..
To change the cards is very simple, and you don't even need to remove the batteries. Just push the old card down, and it will spring up, remove it, and insert a new one.

I have no complaints about these cards, and in my opinion Kingston are one of the better makes. Most cameras come with a small 16mb card just to get you started, but you will soon want to upgrade to a couple of bigger ones I am sure.

You can either download your images direct to your PC, or take the card into your local Max Spielman* and have them printed while you wait. You have the option of sending the cards through the post, to someone without a PC so they can go to Speilman's & choose which pics they like.

The company has a website with some nice pictures, plus some very useful information, however it is down at the moment.:-

A lot of readers have been saying how cheap these are becoming now, check out various sites for a bargain.

I've got 5 SD cards now - two are Kingston Digital - and another on order from Amazon currently. The Kingston ones do seem to suit my Nikon better than the rest though - they read a good deal faster than the others too. Richard.
