The Kingston TravelLite really does exactly what you would expect of it: there is a slot at one end to insert an SD or MMC card, and a USB series A plug on the other.
SD cards are very cheap now (I picked up a 2GB card on Amazon.co.uk for £6.49; at time of writing they are selling 1GB cards for £2.45 and 512MB cards for a tiny ten pence). This makes this reader, used in conjunction with an SD card, a perfectly reasonable alternative to a USB flash ... ...as it has to accommodate the card). Using it in this way also provides greater flexibility: for example, I use a laptop with a built-in SD card reader, so I can have my card permanently inserted in there until I need to use my data on another computer, when I simply transfer it to the reader to take with me; I therefore have one extra USB port free for other uses.
