RAM… RAM and more RAM… that is what a computer needs to keep it up to speed, together with a good quality processor of course, but the RAM is a lot cheaper than the processor, and a lot easier to upgrade. Recently I have whacked my laptop up to full spec regarding the RAM it requires, maybe I should be concentrating on expanding the Hard drive next. Anyway, I was hassled into doing the same for the family desk top, as it was beginning to drag its feet a little. So as I had used Kingston previously, for memory needs, so I decided to buy in a couple of 1GB modules to boost up the desktop so my kids would leave me in peace for a while. After a quick check online for the correct specs, a thing I advice all people to do just to make sure that you are buying the right equipment. (the other way is to actually go into your ‘tower’, take out a module and jot down the specs from that).
Anyway, once I was confident that the figures I had were right then I was soon on the trail of the brilliant Kingston Value memory modules from that well known online super store….

** IN CONCLUSION…
Kingston have done it again, for me anyway. They have brought me the memory modules I need for that low price, allowing me to boost up my desk top RAM without deflating my wallet, keeping the kids happy as well as my bank manager, (although I don’t really care for my bank manager at the moment). The desk top I have added these Kingston modules to is in the E-machine range which my kids use for there school homework, the full capacity of it being 2GB, with 1GB in each ’slot’, so I went and bought the full ’whack’ to stop any future hassles.
The actual module is the standard green colour with many specs of silver solder and eight little black ’microchips’ on either side, this is the look of memory modules and the Kingston range are no exception. These Desktop RAM modules are a lot longer than those for laptops, although being slightly narrower, so you know that you can’t get the two kinds mixed up, but as long as you have done your homework regarding the specs that your PC needs then you shouldn’t have a problem when installing this extra RAM. Just remember, don’t panic about all the numbers and letters surrounding the spec list for these modules, they may look confusing but when you find what your PC needs then the numbers and letters are irrelevant, a ‘moot point’ so to speak, (I do like that phrase).
This 1GB module is as fragile as any other module and needs to be treated with care. So fortunately, when it came to my home, it was wrapped as tightly as a Cuban cigar, giving the module that great chance in life. I do not know if it was Kingston who wrapped it or the well known online site but I was well impressed with the way it was delivered as it was remarkably safe and secure inside its static free casing. For me the Kingston value range offer great deals, selling various RAM sizes for both laptop and desktop, in various capacities, from 128 to 2GB and even a 4GB for those upper crust models. And this Kingston 1GB was no exception, offering the same ‘specs’ which boosted my desktop at a much lower price than some other higher priced modules.
What else can I say about what is technically a wad of plastic with some confusing electronics soldered to it? It does exactly what it is meant to do at a value price, mainly boosting your desk tops performance without costing the earth. Like all RAM modules it was easy to slot into place and these from the Kingston value range were quickly recognised by my system.
In all, If you have to buy extra memory for you desk top, and your specs are the same, then you can’t go wrong with Kingston memory modules especially as they are going for around £15.00 at Amazon.
** Extra bit from me to you…
(not necessary to read if you do not wish)… When fitting any type of RAM, or anything to do with the inners of a PC, you have to try and avoid the dreaded ‘static’ attack. So, if you’re interested, here’s a few tips to achieve that static free result.
Do any PC internal jobs in your ‘static’ free laboratory which lies behind those heavy anti-static flaps, although, if you’re like me then you wont have such a laboratory in your house.
So, failing the anti static laboratory, try to avoid carpets as they are a nightmare for creating static.
Try not to touch any of the main body of the module as this could cause damage from those greasy fingers. I usually either gently grip the edges or cut a small piece of the plastic ‘bag’ that the module come in if I have to touch the main body.
Some companies supply an ‘anti-static’ kit, which comprises of a piece of wire and a few bits of plastic, the wire is intended to be attached to you hand whilst the other end is attached to anything earthed, maybe a radiator. But the Kingston range do not supply this kit, although in my mind it is a waste of time and money.
If you are afraid that you may have rubbed your feet across the carpet a little to much and have built up too much static then the easiest way to ‘discharge’ the static is to touch something earthed, I usually use the pipes leading to a radiator as they are great for the job, or even the pipes leading to the water taps will do just as good, although I wouldn’t recommend changing RAM module in your bathroom.
So, avoid carpets, use something like a radiator pipe to discharge the built up static your body has created and what’s more do not touch the main body of the modules.
