It was a few years ago now, when a phone call came promising to demo a "cleaning service" by cleaning a carpet for free. The sales lead was from a friend, so I accepted.
I was surprised that the saleswoman (a young Welsh woman) who arrived expected to demo a Kirby, but I agreed to it and she then cleaned the carpet as promised.
The 1 hour demo was technically impressive, but the patter involved telling me how dirty my house was and intimated that I was compromising my kids' health by not buying a Kirby to eradicate "the main cause of Asthma", as it was put. The saleswoman tried to baffle me with pseudo-science and "facts". I didn't like that and declined to buy the machine. After the demo, I was asked to provide a list of 20 friends who may be interested in the same deal.
I was told that the Kirby was priced at £1500 with all the extras (the main reason I didn't buy), but a person I'd put them on to later told me that they'd bought one for a "bargain" £800. Assuming the seller still made some commission on that, the machine seemed around 100% overpriced initially!
I don't know if they still employ these sales methods, but I know why they still only sell door-to-door!
