My boyfriend and I moved into a semi just under a year ago. The house has not been decorated anywhere to our tastes so everything has to change. We had a list of things we want to do, the simple jobs and the garden are nearly there but the kitchen, bathroom and construction work in the living room are still left to do.

As I am the proactive one I decided that we need to start getting quotes etc. for the kitchen as this would be something we would consider getting someone in to do. I contact Kitchens Direct via their website as they offer a 'No obligation design survey'. Mmmmmmmmmmmm....

The same day a gentleman called me to arrange an appointment for the next day, 10.00 am on Saturday. I was impressed how quick it was. I was asked whether I would be putting in a kitchen within the next six months. I replied that we were looking at early next year. I explained that we were at the stage of getting quotes and they were the first we called.

The next day @ 10.00, nobody arrived. At 10.15 the saleswoman called to say she was stuck in traffic. At 10.30 she finally arrived, after a few pleasantries we got down the obligatory who KD was and what they could do for us. She asked when we were looking to get a new kitchen so I repeated that we were looking at early next year. At this point her attitude changed. She explained that she only came once and would only design a kitchen if we would commit to placing an order that day. We explained to her that buying a kitchen was a big commitment and we would not make our minds up that day and without shopping around. I told her the price wasn't the only factor, service and quality was important too!

She persisted to try and sell us a finance deal but we told her that we were cash buyers. Even though she made it obvious that she wanted to go and we were wasting her time I carried on asking questions and pushing for a quote. The samples shown we not of the quality described and very limited. She measured up, drew a sketch on graph paper of the kitchen and then announced that she could do the kitchen we wanted within our budget. What budget, we hadn't given her one.

We pushed again for an estimate and after punching a few numbers in the calculator she said it would cost £3.5K to £4K. She then left leaving only her business card. No design no breakdown of costs - nothing! We would only get that if we would commit to an order. How can we commit if we don't know what we are committing to?!?!?
