My partner and I are in the process of renovating our property. An extension is going on the back of our house and as we have to knock out the kitchen window as access, we will be replacing our very old and much neglected kitchen.
I had searched around on the net and found a few kitchen companies and requested some brochures. I came to the kitchen direct website and entered my details for brochures to be sent. I had to enter my telephone details as well as postal address for them to send the brochures out. Within 2 hours I had a telephone call from the company wanting to come and do a design appointment in my house. I agreed and made the appointment for when both my partner and I would be home.
Meanwhile, I researched some kitchens and prices online. We knew roughly what we wanted and how much we could afford to spend, so we didn't think the appointment with the salesman would take too long at all. How wrong could I be???
The salesman arrived slightly early, but was very pleasant. We showed him our kitchen, made some coffee and sat at the table ready to discuss our options.
As I said, we knew roughly what we wanted and where we wanted the items to go in the design. The salesman disagreed with our design and wanted to do his own. I specifically said I didn't want the cooker/hob in the corner of the room as this wastes a lot of space, but he continued to draw it in the plan. He talked a lot while he was drawing up his plan, which lead to mistakes being made and things being put in the wrong place. Time was passing and my 3 children were moaning about tea, yet he continued to talk and talk and talk. To be honest, I just wanted him to give us a price and leave. He kept the price list well hidden, right up until the last minute when he started to make calculations. I spied part of the price list and noticed that one of the base cabinets cost a whopping £1900 - yup I said £1900 just for one unit!!!!!
3 and a half hours later, he placed a piece of paper in front of us. He wanted £14,000 for our kitchen. I couldn't hide the shock on my face, that price was way out of our price range. The salesman fiddled with his paper, got his calculator back out and confidently said "If you take it today, you can have it for £10,500".
We said even that was out of our price range. He looked fairly annoyed, packed up all of his things and left.
We quickly ordered in fish and chips for tea - the kids were starving by this point. Later on that evening, I went online to B & Q. I managed to design the same kitchen, with the same applicances in the order I wanted but with a much more attractive price. £4,000.
A couple of days ago, I had a "follow-up" call from Kitchens Driect, asking why we hadn't placed an order. I explained it was too expensive. I was then asked what sort of price we would be prepared to pay. When I said we didn't want to pay more than £6,000, he told me they didn't do kitchens in that price range.
Having read some of the reviews for this company on ciao, I wish I'd stayed well clear. I hope they delete my details from their database and decide not to pester me for months by telephone.
