As I looked through the various digital cameras, I knew Kodak was a good make, the model seemed to have all the mod-cons I wanted in a camera, but more importantly, the question in the back of my mind was; could my wife use it? Don’t get me wrong, she’s great - just not the most technically minded person I know. She is the type of person who has problems with the TV remote.
The old camera was ideal for her, but a year ago the internal battery in our old Fuji digital camera died. It held the settings like date and various menu settings so when we turned it on it would constantly ask for the date and other features that would drive us crazy. Therefore, I needed a new camera that my wife could use without her feeling frustrated.

The Kodak C330 seemed to do the trick, though it was difficult by looking at a small picture on the Amazon’s web site but it was worth the risk for the price (£130).
It has 4MP (mega pixels), which is ideal for most people. It had a fairly good LCD display, at 1.5 inches, though I would have liked it slightly bigger. The LCD display has buttons around the right side. These allow you to control the features and change settings. The main one is Review, which lets you view the pictures that have been taken and stored in the camera. It’s pretty straightforward, with a zoon facility and a thumbnail/album view too, though the thumbnails are a little too small as the display is so small, and makes them difficult to see any detail - nevertheless, it’s good facility to have.
There is a Share facility to mark particular pictures so you can find favourite pictures easily later on. We don’t use this very often as we copy all the pictures to the computer and pick out the ones we like by hand. We can view them on the computer screen and take our time without using up valuable battery life in the small LCD display. I find this is more practical, but the Share facility is nice to have when you don’t have a computer available.
It’s very light (just 0.2kg) and quite small (9.2cm wide, 6.5cm high and 3.5cm depth), taking pictures in JPEG format. It also has 16 Mb internal memory and a slot for standard SD flash memory cards.
The camera has a motorised drive, so the lens moves out when you’re using the optical zoom, which is a standard feature for most models but better than our last camera. The optical zoom feature is only 3x (magnified 3 times), which is only basic, but fine for most family-type shots. The 5x digital zoom is good, though I tend not to use as it increases the pixels and decreases the quality of the picture.
The internal flash is adequate and the camera supposedly has a red-eye reduction facility but this doesn’t always work. The auto focus has a good contrast detection so the picture quality is very good when moving around, though I’ve found that the quality is less when taking pictures of people at far-off distances.
It uses two AA batteries but they don’t last very long, though using the CRV3 (included when you buy it) lasts a lot longer. You can buy replacements for under a tenner, and better than having to change the AA batteries. I find the CRV3 batteries work out cheaper in the long run too. While I’m on the subject, I noticed that the plus and minus signs near the battery compartment are the wrong way round, though the picture diagrams of the batteries are correct (this might be fixed if you’ve got a newer version).
It has a simple interface; the main one is the button to take the shots, which has a dial around it. The dial has a really nice design that turns it on and allows the user to select the type of shot. There are 8 modes, though we tend to use the Auto mode, which is fine for most things. The only time I have used other settings is when it is getting dark or the kids were moving about etc. For still “smile at the camera” shots, Auto is fine – and the only one my wife understands. There is a movie mode but I found the quality is poor. I rarely use it, but useful when necessary. If you planning to use this facility often, it’s probably wise to get a high capacity SD card (2Gb+) and use the card just for this purpose, otherwise you’ll end up with no memory space just when you need to use it.
The software allows you to connect the camera via the usual USA cable. The software includes a management system called Kodak Easy Share, to keep your pictures in albums on your computer. I gave up on using this software as I found it irritating to use, taking up the entire screen and not very intuitive. The location of the pictures (stored as JPEG) are difficult to find where they’re kept (though you can change the location) so it’s difficult to make backups. It could be designed a lot better. If you’re looking for a facility to manage your pictures as albums there are much better ones around. Personally, I prefer putting the SD cards into a card reader connected to the computer and copying them manually into a folder. It’s simple and easy to use.
It includes something called a Docking Station insert (a piece of plastic that helps the camera attach to the docking station), which is completely useless unless you buy the actual docking station, which you buy separately for connecting to compatible printers.
* Some note about digital memory and pictures *
Any modern digital camera can take pictures in multiple-resolution modes and employ various techniques to compress the picture so it takes up an efficient amount of size in memory card. The requirements for digital memory size can be dramatically different, depending on what settings are being used. If you know the file size of the images normally taken by a camera, you can calculate the number of pictures by dividing the total digital memory card capacity by the picture file size (lowest resolution) or highest compression mode possible. For example, some cameras say they offer enough memory to store 300 or 400 photographs when, in fact, they can store only 30 high-resolution, (uncompressed) images on the digital memory card provided with the camera. Always try to determine the highest quality, uncompressed image file size of the camera to understand the camera’s image capacity and how much additional digital camera memory you will need.
For the C330 camera, the default settings will store 1 picture at around 512Kb, so 2 pictures take up around 1Mb, 30 pictures with 64Mb memory card, 500 pictures with 1Gb (giga byte) memory card etc.
I bought a 512Mb SD card, at the same time as buying the camera, which is fine for taking over 250 pictures at default settings.
If you want to get a new memory card, the price have reduced dramatically over the past few months. Don’t buy them from high street stores – you can buy a good 2Gb (well over 1 thousand pictures) for under a tenner at online sites like Amazon (buy a couple of spares and get free delivery too). High street stores will charge you two or even three times the price.
* In Summary *
There are very few problems that I can find with it. To be picky, there are some minor annoyances. There is a noticeable delay when taking a shot, and when the LCD display switches off (to save on battery power when you’ve left it on for too long without taking a picture) there is nothing obvious to turn it back on (except taking a picture, using the view-finder or turn the camera off and back on.
If you’re not into photography, don’t understand (or care) about digital cameras and your looking for something cheap and cheerful, this camera is ideal.

...use this card at a Kodak machine to get your prints. I use a 1 GB card and I have never needed to buy another one as you can store them on your PC and get them printed so even if you ever fill your card you can always store them safely and take them off your camera.

The only downside I would say with this camera is that the batteries only last 2 minutes. Luckily I have a battery charger and rechargeable ...
