**Note: If you are looking for professional jargon or technical expertise like ISO levels and the like then you need read no further, since I don't really know what these are; this is a novice review of the camera as a device for taking everyday pictures**
APPEARANCE ---------------------- The Z740 is a digital camera in a league of its own. First of all, it takes the style of an SLR camera, but integrates the ease and size of a compact 'point and shoot'. In fact, I bought this camera thinking that it would be larger in size as one assumes from the picture, but it is a mere 3.8 x 3.1 x 2.8 inches. At first, this was a little off-puting, since I wanted something substantial, but its functionality and the benefits of its size have changed my mind.
The silver casing is considered by some to be a bit tacky, but to be honest, if you can come to terms with the diminutive size of the camera, then you should be secure enough to apprecaite function over pretension.
ERGONOMICS ---------------------- The camera is designed to fit the hand (providing that you're right handed) and its clear that a good deal of thought have gone into the curvature and rubber grip of the casing. The choice between using the standard eye piece or the high quality LCD screen is appreciated, although since the eyepiece is just a miniature of the screen, the latter seems the most logical to use. The buttons and dial are conveiently placed and there is no issue with the size or location of the power switch that has plagued the Kodak DX models.
FUNCTIONALITY ------------------------ I believe that this camera is an extremely good balance between automatic and manual function. There are 4 basic modes (auto, portrait, moving and night), plus 10 other varieties of scene (including fireworks, snow, children and flowers) as well as the option to manually set the aperture and exposure levels of your photo, although I have yet to attempt such a feat!
The camera automatically senses whether you are taking a portrait or lanscape photo and adjusts the image when downloaded to your PC. It can also take bursts of photos so that you can capture the precise moment of a bird's flight or candles being blown out and as with all digitals, delete the crappy images as you go, rather than waiting for them to be processed.
The zoom on this camera is fantastic. The high (10x) OPTICAL zoom means that the image remains crisp and detailed, while cameras with a higher DIGITAL zoom tend to distort the image and reduce its quality as you zoom in. A problem however, is image stabilisation. When you are zoomed in to an object far away, the slightest movement can create a blurred image and the Z740 does not have a tool to counteract this problem where some cameras do. However, if you lean the camera on a wall or manually stabilise it another way, this does not pose a significant problem.
The 5 Megapixel quality rounds off the camera as a leader in its field, meaning that photos taken on this setting can be blown up to 20 x 30 inches without losing quality. Of course, you have the option of reducing the quality to 4MP or less to reduce memory consumption and this is ample for regular photos (4 x 6 inches).
DATA TRANSFER -------------------------- 'EasyShare' is Kodak's way of making photo printing a matter of plug and play. If you want to print photos at home, this is an extremely trouble-free procedure. The camera comes with adapters for the Kodak printer docks and can be sat onto the printer for photo transfer without the need to download onto a PC.
The USB cable provided makes transfer onto a PC extremely easy and although the software provided is not compatible with Windows service pack 2 for XP, it is possible to download the update from Kodak's website. Once this is done, you can download photos onto the Kodak photo suite for editing and printing/emailing at your leisure.
ACCESSORIES ---------------------- There is a variety of optional accessories for the Z740, including lenses and printers. As far as bags are concerned, I purchased the recommended Kodak Medium camera bag from Amazon, but this is about 4 times bigger than the camera itself and since you don't need film or a telescopic lense, there's no need for all this extra space. I have yet to find an adequate bag. If anyone does, please let me know!
SUMMARY ---------------- Overall, a fantastic buy with a variety of functions at a good price. If you're after a professional SLR camera with lots of twiddly bits and a meaty lense to adjust, this is probably not for you, but if you prefer a shapely semi-pro looking camera to the standard block shaped models and value a balance of automatic functions, manual options, high resolution and high zoom, then I thoroughly recomment the Z740 from Kodak.
** I bought the Z740 from Amazon @ £220 with free delivery, although I believe the cheapest to be Pixmania @ £218 including delivery**
Advantages: good quality pictures, print pictures when you want, easy to use Disadvantages: plastic feel, digital view finder low resolution.
...mega pixel camera, with a Kodak colour science chip.
the printer dock and software needs to run with windows 98 onwards and internet explorer 50.1 and higher.
enough of that any way
right down to business when I bought the camera I got a 32mb memory card ,but due the high quality of the pictures you don't get much storage space, so I recommend buying a larger memory card. I bought a 128mb card for just £19.99.
The camera is quite small and compact ... ...up for it. The Kodak Science chip gives you a rich, vibrant picture against most lighting situations, except in direct sunlight where it does cause a problem. The digital view finder has a very low resolution but the end results are worth it, I have found my self taking more and more pictures since buying this item.
The camera does eat batteries, you get a lithium battery pack so I would recommend you use this as it charges up by plugging it into ...

Advantages: Inexpensive compared to similarly-specificationed cameras, ease of use, looks good Disadvantages: Horrible JPEG artifacting, slow autofocus, no manual focus, image stabilisation
...it looks *good*. The 10x Kodak Retinar lens is big, and this gives it an appearance resembling a digital SLR more than a compact camera. Don't let this fool you - this is a Kodak consumer product, and to get the price as low as it is, some corners have been cut.
Bad points:
Compression: There is only one compression option available (normal JPEG). There is no option to store uncompressed images. This means that if you look at the pictures you take ... ...only really fit the overpriced Kodak lenses.
You do not get a rechargeable battery with this camera; instead you get a Kodak single-use lithium battery pack. No power cable, either. The lens cap doesn't like to stay on the lens.
Good points:
Price! It's difficult to get a 5MP camera or a 10x zoom camera for the price of this, let alone both in one.
EVF: This is an improvement on cheaper and older models that I've used - it lets you get a better ...

Advantages: Comfortable to hold, great zoom, zooms in on areas of picture already taken Disadvantages: Original battery unrechargeable, lens cover comes off too easily
...which points you to the Kodak website where you can purchase their expensively priced accessories. I myself have chosen instead to buy my accessories from wholesalers and EBay.
Price:
Unfortunately the camera normally is quite expensive, but as I never seem to have that sort of money to spend all at once, and am hopeless at saving up I had to buy mine from a catalogue , so it was even more expensive. From the Littlewoods catalogue it cost me approx ... ...very computer literate, but the Kodak software for transferring your pictures over still frustrates me. To start with, it is horrendous to understand what you are meant to do!!!!! When you do manage to figure it out it isn't that hard, but the program can be really temperamental, so you can do something one way one day and it will work, but then try doing exactly the same the day after and it decides that it doesn't like it. Also be aware…I put some ...

Advantages: Light, loads of features, 10x optical zoom, large LCD Hi Def monitor. Disadvantages: Poor lens cap. Hard to find suitable case. Auto focus can be poor.
...Hi Tec Japanse kit. The kodak provides everything a non professional could need, except with the exception of manual focus and maybe total manual control.
The 5 meg resolution is more than enough for most of us, and the 10x optical zoom is amazing! There are after market lenes available for this camera, including a 3x zoom converter, which would take it up to an impressive 30x optical zoom!! Theres also a wide angle lens and several filters aswell! ... ...you to control either the shutter speed, aperture or white balance. The shutter speed goes down to 8 seconds, which is great for taking those photos you see of streets at night with car lights leaving trails! Basicly this camera would suit anyone from a first timer, to someone with a a bit of knowledge who needs more than just a basic 'point and shoot'
The only bad points are; the lens cap is very easy to knock off, and can come off while the camera's ...
