I had my doubts about the true value of a digital camera, having used bulky Sony Mavica and Fujidigital cameras at work. But as my birthday approached and my wife kept badgering me about what I would like, I decided to have a look at digital cameras. I looked at some of the big names -Sony, Fuji, Olympus and Canon and at Konica and Minolta. The chap in the local camera shop showed me examples of photos he'd taken of Ramsgate Harbour and the amazing thing was that the realistic quality of the reflections on the water from the boats was far superior for the Minolta and Konica than for the mainstream equivalent models. Armed with this, it was down to design and the cigarette packet size of the Konica sold me on it. The camera can take both SD and Sony stick memory - both at once even and comes with 16 Mb to get you going. A 128 Mb SD module will hold nearly 400 pictures at 2 Megapixel resolution, which is more than sufficient for most needs although the camera will take up to 3.2 Megapixels. It will also take small snatches of Video (without sound) which is nice if you want to photograph fireworks being set off or something oflike that. Its a really handy size, and has many features, allowing forced flash, red-eye elimination etc. You can even take photos in Sepia. It offers 3x optical and 2x digital zoom - giving really nice shots of ships leaving Dover Eastern Docks taken from the Prince of Wales pier (about 1 mile or more away). It does however take up to 4 hours to recharge the battery when completely discharged and a replacement battery will cost £40+ from most outlets. The one worry I have is the lens assembly, when extended for full zoom does seem a little loose. However at between £200 and £250, this little camera represents great value and eliminates the need to take and develop multiple shots of the same location/person just in case you didn't get it right. And the quality of the output is just amazing - beautiful lifelike images every time even indoors -I took some great shots of the triptychs in Antwerp cathedral and also got superb detail in my external shots. It also means that my wife no longer moans at me for wasting money on film and developing a whole reel just to get 10 half-decent pictures. As something of a technophobe, she has even taken a shine to the Konica and used it with some degree of success.
To sum up - a great little camera with many features and fairly easy to use; good value for money
