I donīt happen to be a computer nor a photography freak, but I manage well with both disciplines, and I had had previous experiences with not-so-good digital cameras whose quality was not by far comparable to my good old optical one. But as finally digital cameras started catching up I decided to go for it, and try to get hold of a moderately good gadget.
After annoying a poor sales assistant for more than half an hour trying to make him explain to me in understandable words the features, advantages and disadvantages of every camera offering around 3 megapixels and maximum price of around 400 pounds, I decided on this one... and have never regretted! By then, February 2003, I paid around 300 well-spent pounds for it. The characteristics that made me decide for it were several: the main thing was, of course, image quality: itīs 3.2 megapíxels, but apart from that, its definition and quality are outstanding; I was lucky enough to be able
to see some prints coming directly from the camera in standard mode, and I must say, you couldnīt distinguish them from "normal" photographs.
The camera size is extremely comfortable, more or less like a cigarette box, and it has a steel casing, which makes it a bit heavier than other cameras, but also much more resistant, besides giving it a hard look (it is hard indeed!). It has a full-colour viewfinder and offers a very good image quality; graphic interface is superb, intuitive and easy to use. It has few buttons and many visual functions, and thatīs what I appreciate in a digital device. Battery is lithium rechargeable and really long-lasting (with a normal use I recharge it every 3 or 4 weeks), charger is included in price and charging time is around 5-6 hours.
Pictures can be made in three quality modes: high (2048x1536), medium (1600x1200) and low (640x480). Personally I have it set at medium and pics are perfect, and only use the high one with landscapes, specially when I wish to print the pictures in A3 paper.
It includes also many functions: besides the usual ones, like flash, red-eye remover, timing device, against-the-light pics, etc, you can also make sepia photos, modify the pic within the camera, select groups of photos, see miniatures onscreen, make digital zoom on the screen photo and many other things that are not usually required, but itīs always useful to know theyīre there! Date, time, numbers and comments can also be printed on each photo.
Camera includes an optic zoom and macro function for pictures closer than 50 cm, being both functons very easy to use and offering great results. Another advantage is the way the objective goes out and in, thanks to the mechanical movement of the lid, that sends a signal to the objective to come out. This is very useful, since the lid completely covers the objective when the camera is off, preventing glass damage, and remember itīs a steel lid, not just a piece of plastic as in other cameras, where the objective remains much more exposed.
Besides the camera itself, you get the battery charger, USB connector, intallation CD and a useful string to hold the camera.
USB connection is other advantage: in MacIntosh computers you donīt even need an installation, although in PC it is required. Once installed, the computer instantly recognizes the memory cacrd as an additional Hard Drive, being then able to just copy and paste our pics to a new folder. A very important detail never to forget: always copy the images to our HD before modifing them - even if itīs only rotating them! -, if itīs done directly on the cameraīs memory card it can be damaged and not recognize the pic anymore! You must also delete the pics always from the camera itself, not from the computer.
Some disadvantages? Let me think... well, the camera doesnīt include a case, and itīs something almost essential. It comes also with a 16 Mb SD memory card, clearly short. But it can use every kind of memory card in the market. I acquired a 64 Mb SD card and have never been able to fill it!
The camera I bought included the possibility of video recording, but with no voice. For me it was no disadvantage at all, since I didnīt intend it for filming, but it could be a drawback for someone.
Since I got this camera I have never gone back to optical ones... in fact I found my old one in a drawer some weeks ago and realised with awe that I had almost forgotten how to use it! And I donīt even need to go to the 24-hour to develop them, since with a fairly normal printer and some photo paper, you get your photos at home in minutes!
