The Konica is a very well built little camera, with an aluminium case. It's hefty enough and solid-looking enough to instil confidence that it won't snap in two like some more flimsy-looking digitals, and yet small enough to drop into your pocket as you walk out the door to go to a party.

I have a confession to make first of all. I put next-to no thought into buying this camera. I'd just got very lucky and had won some money on an online casino, so was feeling very flush. I decided one lunchtime to go to a camera shop and buy a digital camera with my winnings. And within 2 minutes, I was walking back out of the shop with a Konica Revio 410.

I'd always been sceptical of digital cameras, being an avowed 35mm user. The resolution wasn't good enough to make prints come out with decent quality, and I was very dubious about the picture quality.
However, having owned one for about a year now, I think they're fantastic!
The Konica is a very well built little camera, with an aluminium case. It's hefty enough and solid-looking enough to instil confidence that it won't snap in two like some more flimsy-looking digitals, and yet small enough to drop into your pocket as you walk out the door to go to a party.
The biggest advantage that digitals have over 35mm cameras just now is that you see the photo you've taken almost immediately. And you can delete the ones you don't like just as quick. Consequently, even though the memory card the Konica comes with is a piddly little 16mb one, it'll still store 17 top-quality images (2304x1704). I generally found that this memory card is about the equivalent of having a 36-exposure film in my 35mm - in the sense that I could delete the ones I didn't like and be left with about as many as I probably would have kept after getting my 35mm film developed.
The Konica has two other quality settings too - medium (basically 2 megapixel - 1600x1200) and low (640x480). These are OK, but you have to be aware that you can only print these images at small sizes. 1600x1200 will just about print at 6x4 inches, but that's about your lot.
The picture quality is excellent in just about all natural light situations. Easily comparable to my Canon EOS 50 SLR, with decent film. Colours are rich, and some of the natural gradients that come out are breathtaking (like the early morning golfing photo I took with the low sun creating great shafts of light through the mist, and giving my friends 60 foot long shadows!)
The camera has an excellent macro setting too, used to good effect photographing bees, butterflies and flowers in my garden. It's not the very best on the market, but good enough to get close to flowers and pick up the nice drops of dew on them, for example. It goes down to about 3 inches in my experience.
It also has a couple of nice black & white and sepia modes, which can save you having to convert the photo later in, for example, Photoshop.
The other options are a little less impressive - the zoom is motorised and a bit jerky. It can often take a couple of back-and-forth attempts until it's just right. Also, with 3x optical and 2x digital zoom, it's important to remember that once you get towards the maximum, you'll start seeing picture quality dropping off.
The two flash modes - full, and fill-in are both too harsh in artificial and low-light conditions, I feel. I end up trying a few photos with the flash, and a few without (the camera automatically uses a very slow shutter-speed if you're not using the flash, but this has its limitations if you're trying to photograph moving objects - such as cats or small nephews!) to see what comes out best.
But these are minor complaints. The camera has served me very well over the past two years. I've taken about 4500 photos with it (you do get a bit trigger-happy when you know it's not going to cost money to see your photos!), and the vast majority of the time, it's been fantastic.
As a second camera for taking good quality snaps, it's excellent. Especially now that you can easily pick it up for less than £200. Worth exploring a few retailers though, because with the 420z out now too, this cosmetically older model may be cheaper still.
My only suggestion is to invest in a bigger memory card if you're going to want to take it on holiday. A 128mb card will probably set you back about £12-15, and will store a whopping 143 photos at best quality.
Advantages: Small, looks good, easy to use, excellent quality pictures Disadvantages: Poor red eye control.
An cracking little camera. My husband paid £247 for this camera at QED with free delivery, but have seen them on the net recently for under £200. I bought the 400 version previous to this, but it has gone missing, and I now share this on. The 410 has a few improved features.
On a 256MB card, we get 144 pictures at the highest resolution, but even on a 64 MB card, you can get 40 shots on the finest resolution. The picture quality is brilliant, as ... ...problems with pictures outside, it's just when you get inside dark buildings. As with the previous model, the pictures can be grainy in darker settings. You do have the option to change the exposure and flash settings, and this does make a difference; it just takes a bit of practice to get it right.
Useful Features
• 4.0-megapixels (maximum 2,304 x 1,704-pixel resolution images.) Can be set to lower resolution to get more pictures on the memory ...

Advantages: light, small, stylish Disadvantages: new model out KD-420Z
The konica has stormed onto the market showing off its 4million pixels and 3 times optical zoom whilst maintaining a small shell!
4 million pixels? well each picture is broken down by little dots and stored digitally, these are called pixels, if there isnt enough pixels to fill the picture gaps form between the pixels causing a lack in detail(fuzzyness), so the benefit of 4 is you can have a larger picture!
3x optical zoom? well there is two types ... ...is docking stationed and the konica is just plug streight into the camera. how long do the batterys last? how longs a piece of string quite a while if they are used frequently over 300 pictures but not you could get a few weeks out of one!
either camera is a good choice! ...

...a digital camera.
The Konica KD-410Z is the new improved version of the KD-400z.
It will retails at anything between £320 and £350. I paid £335 after much haggling in Jessops, they didn't have to price match as no-one else had it in stock!
It has all the same features as it's younger brother will a couple of additions, a hard copy manual and longer video shooting (up to 30 secs I beleive).
One of the most impressive features is the dual memory ... ...or Memory Stick (MS). Actually putting the cards into the camera is straight forward.
The digital zoom is also a new one on me, being able to zoom in and out after taking the picture in the comfort of your own home is truly what digital is all about.
In looks it has been slightly altered but still maintains the same very stylish looks.
It is extremely easy to use and the picture quality is very impressive. The menu is so simple and easy to follow, ...
