I Wanna get Digital, Digital

Advantages: Minolta AF lens mount, Anti-Shake CCD, Flexibility, Resolution, OUtput
Disadvantages: Price, Weight

...have waited until Minolta (now Konica Minolta) released a proper Digital SLR, that would allow me to use the majority of my existing kit, before I jumped into the expensive world of "pro-sumer" digital SLRs.

While Minolta have been happily releasing model after model of SLR-a-like cameras with integrated lenses, there has been a distinct lack of a true SLR system. You can imagine my excitement then, when I heard that a digital ...
...seemed to pass and eventually I forgot all about it, until one day I decided to catch up with the folks at my local Jessops store and stumbled across the newly released, and long-awaited, Dynax 7D.

To be honest, my buying one was a forgone conclusion. My only digital camera, a Fuji Finepix F601Z, never gets used for more than the occasional happy-snap, and my trusty Dynax 7 has been my photographic workhorse since it was acquired several ... more

When I got bitten by the photography bug about 6 years ago I bought into the Minolta range of cameras, my first being a Dynax 505si (reviewed elsewhere on this very site). Having used it for two years or more I felt I'd pretty much pushed it to it's limit. This, combined with my continuing need for new gadgets, saw me glancing longingly at the Dynax 9 in Jessops. But £1000 was too much for me to justify on a camera body, so i just admired from afar.. ...
...frequent visits to Jessops, I spied what looked like a 'baby' Dynax-9. What was this? It was cheaper (£600), smaller and boasted a whole range of new features. I had to take a look. Testing the new Dynax-7 out, on the spot, in the store had me hooked. So after a period of frantic saving I returned and bought what, I am happy to say, is my primary camera. The trusty old Dynax 505si still has a place in the camera bag, usually loaded with a different ...

Versatile quality SLR

Advantages: Controls are well positioned and easy to use.
Disadvantages: Could be daunting for many camera users

I've had my Dynax/Maxxum 7 for a couple of years now and taken 150+ films with it. I agonised over buying it as there are a lot of cameras out there for this sort of money but the things that sold it to me were: *3 settings memories *Viewfinder display *Flash options *LCD information centre screen *Custom functions menus *Data saver (extra but worth it) The settings memory function is great as I have my most used settings saved and accesible ...
...means I have landscape, macro and flash settings available at the twist of a knob. A bit like having programmable mountain, flower and nightime modes ( or any other modes for that matter!). The bright viewfinder display is excellent, telling me exactly what the camera is focused on, what exposure it recommends and what compensation I have in place, or what bracketing exposures will be taken, flash status, focus confirmation, camera shake warning ...

Not for the beginner

Advantages: Has loads of functions
Disadvantages: Too many functions for the amateur/beginner

A fantastic camera, with just a few disadvantages. It has many, many features - too many for the occasional user, and too complex for the beginner. But for those already used to cameras of this kind it is a revelation, it does everything with the minimum of fuss. The huge LCD display is great, you can keep track of everything from there. If you are short/long-sighted the camera will compensate for your lack of focus (up to a certain limit). The body ...
...for the fingers - as long as you are a person with small to medium hand size. Those with large hands may find it a touch fiddly as the body is smaller than many older Minoltas. In short, though a bit pricey, well worth the money as long as you are a competant camera user, willing to spend bit of time trawling through the instruction book. ...

Supurb SLR - especially for Minolta users.

Advantages: Excellent build quality, ergonomically laid out controls, fast auto focus and lcd screen showing plenty of information.
Disadvantages: Expensive camera, expensive accessories.

This camera is really for the amateur/professional photography market. The controls are very well laid out with most of the major functionality incorporated in the rotating dials at the top of the camera. 3 types of metering modes are selectable – spot, centre weighted average and 14-segment honeycomb. Autofocus has a 9-point sensor for user selective focusing. It can be set to continuous autofocus mode for subject tracking. The most useful feature ...
...number, shutter speed, aperture, flash status, metering setting and autofocus setting that is easy to read. At the press of a button, this display can be switched to show exposure history for the previous 5 frames taken. For the beginner, the camera can be set to the full auto program mode, where the camera controls all major settings and it becomes a point and shoot device. I have used the camera for weddings, holidays and proud to say I captured ...

Dynax 7

Advantages: Intuitive controls, Plain English manual, Eye Start for focusing and exposure, Frame history
Disadvantages: Price (a bit steep)

I have just become the proud owner of the new Minolta dynax 7 camera. After wading throughover 50 pages of the instruction manual I have finally got the hang of most of its features. This camera is suitable for intermediate to advanced users and is packed full of features. The one i like the most is the automatic exposure and focusing as soon as you pick up the camera and look through the view finder, now those missed once in a life time action ...
...just the right weight, not too heavy or too light, and the grip of the camera is superb. All the controls of the camera easily fall to hand (or finger) and are intuitive to use. Overall I would say that for the intermediate to advanced user spending just over £600.00 for this camera is well worth it and you won't be dissapointed in the results. ...
