Advantages: Plenty of features, easy to use, sleek design and great value for money. Disadvantages: Styling might not appeal to some, uses expensive SD card media.
This was last year's Christmas present to my wife, so I have had a year to play with it.
WHY SHE CHOSE IT:
Having used my Minolta E203 digital camera (a predecessor to the E323) my wife wanted to go for something similar. Being 2 years newer than my camera, we assumed all the disadvantages would have been ironed out in this new model. The look, design and styling also appealed to my wife and at first impression I did ... ...life than in the pictures. We bought it in Jessops for £125 and it was the cheapest we could find it at the time, high street or internet. The other model my wife considered was the Canon Ixus Digital II. The Canon was her number one choice as she owns a Canon Ixus M-1 APS camera and the model and brand is familiar to her. However, it was too expensive so it was to be the Minolta E323.

WHY SHE CHOSE IT:
Having used my Minolta E203 digital camera (a predecessor to the E323) my wife wanted to go for something similar. Being 2 years newer than my camera, we assumed all the disadvantages would have been ironed out in this new model. The look, design and styling also appealed to my wife and at first impression I did not like it but it looks much better in real life than in the pictures.
FEATURES (listed in order of what I think is most useful to the majority of users):
3.2 megapixels Well designed and colourful menu and easy to navigate in. 3x optical zoom (35mm format equivalent of 36-108mm) and 4x digital zoom. 5 scene modes: Sport Action, Portrait, Night, Cosmetic and Slim. Additional modes: Macro and landscape. Flash modes: Auto, auto with red-eye reduction, fill flash and flash cancel. Movie mode - recording possible to full capacity of memory card. 1.6 inch LCD screen. Built in optical viewfinder. Compatible with SD (Secure Digital) or MMC (Multimedia) cards Powered by 2 AA batteries, or 1 CR-V3 lithium battery, or optional AC adapter. Self timer - 2 or 10 seconds delay USB 2.0 compliant (data transfer rate from camera of up to 12Mb per second) USB Direct-Print capability. Video cable for connection to a television set. Images saved as JPEG files. Tripod thread located near centre of the camera's bottom side.
BUILD QUALITY:
The camera feels robust and solid, but not heavy. The rounded corners and sleek design makes it pocket friendly. I keep it in my jacket when going out and it has never got caught or snagged when taken out. The camera's telescopic lens is protected by a built-in lens cover that automatically opens when the camera is powered on. However, a case is recommended to protect the body's flush surface from scratches, which is not included in the box.
PICTURE QUALITY:
The camera performs very well in most situations. Exposure is generally at the correct levels except for scenes were the lighting was too bright or if taking against a white background, in which case exposure compensation can be adjusted. In situations where the camera thinks it is very bright, the camera tends to under expose the photos, hence making the picture look a bit dull. Exposure can be manually adjusted to compensate for this effect.
At maximum optical zoom, the pictures do tend to come out very slightly grainy. This is due to the quality of the lens and the quality degradation of the picture is expected for these types of compact cameras.
At maximum digital zoom the pictures appear very soft. This comes in handy if you want a softening effect in certain photographs, like portrait types.
The difference between optical and digital zoom is that the optical enlarges the picture via the lens (optics) while the latter enlarges via computer/electronics method called interpolation. In all cases, optical zoom produces much better quality pictures. However, digital zoom only kicks in once the optical zoom has reached its maximum limit.
Macro mode is outstanding, and the results are sharp with excellent colour reproduction. The subject can be as close as 15cm from the front of the lens in macro mode.
Night mode is also pretty good as long as the subject is sufficiently close enough to the camera for the flash to be effective and for the camera to be held steady (flash is effective up to 4 meters in my opinion).
In landscape mode (where the camera sets the focus to infinity) the camera performs fairly well, with good detail captured for far away objects.
If you want a picture to be printed in large format (A4 size) then the camera can be set to interpolate the picture to 6 megapixels. Although level of detail would be the same, the doubling of the pixels would give a smoother edge to the objects in the picture.
The slim mode option stretches the image horizontally or vertically, slightly distorting the proportions of the subject (normally a person's face) to give a more flattering appearance (I have never seen this option on any other camera).
In cosmetic mode, the camera softens skin tones and enhances colour slightly for more warm and natural portraits (as with the slim mode, I believe the results are more as a result of computer wizardry than the optical equipment).
In portrait mode, the camera places more emphasis on the subject by setting the a larger aperture and throwing the background out of focus.
The sport action mode performs quite well as long as you are shooting fast moving objects on a bright sunny day.
MENU (in record, playback and setup modes):
Very easy to navigate in the menu during record mode. One press of a button will display the menu and using the 4-way arrow pad and OK button can quickly change the camera settings such as recording mode, resolution, timer, exposure compensation, scene selection, white balance etc.
During playback mode, the currently displayed image can be erased, rotated, write protected, specified for printing (DPOF), make copies suitable for emailing and select slide show.
In setup mode, the following can be configured: time and date, operation beep, help display toggle, language, TV system, reformat card, power save modes, file number reset and master reset.
MY VERDICT:
At first impression, you would think that for £125 you got a pretty basic camera and that's it. Well, it's a basic camera with lots of nice extra features that are not immediately obvious from the sales brochures and catalogues. I don't think there is a single outstanding feature in this camera that would blow the competition out of the water but one thing's for sure - it is an excellent all-rounder. Compared with my friend's Nikon Coolpix 885, the picture quality is not as good (this is where I believe Nikon excels in). Also initially, I did not like the styling, looks like something from the original Star Trek series. But I think it's grown on me and I must admit it does looks neat and well built with no protruding parts. The other thing is that it uses the expensive SD card as its media and you will need to buy one with bigger capacity immediately as the one that comes in the box is only 16Mb.
I cannot think of a reason why anyone would be disappointed if they chose this camera.
I have added some pictures I have taken with this camera.
Picture 2: Is of a gecko taken with maximum optical zoom and macro mode when I was on holiday in Malaysia.
Picture 3: A sunny day at Bushy Park, this picture of the Leg of Mutton Pond was taken in landscape mode with my sunglasses placed in front of the camera's lens.
Advantages: 3.2 mega pixel, 3x zoom, video, 1.5" LCD Disadvantages: Autofocus has a slight delay when taking a photo
A fantastic digital camera capable of producing 3.2 mega pixel images, perfect for any sized prints and high resolution pictures. The camera has a 3x optical zoom and 4x digital zoom perfect for any type of shot without disppanning. I recently took this camera to New York on a school Arts trip; I got some excellent pictures of the city at night by using the night mode which makes the camera more sensitive to decreased amounts of light, I also managed ... ...optical zoom really helped when a piece of scenery is too far away. When visiting New York me and a couple of friends came across some street dancers the E323 camera comes with a built in movie mode so I managed too get a 4 minute video of the dancers routine which is of good quality. The camera supports the Secure Digital media up to 512mb, I am currently using a 128mb card which can hold around 200 high definition pictures. The batteries it uses ...

Advantages: Easy to use and compact Disadvantages: No sound on movie recording
Introduction
----------------
The Minolta DiMAGE E323 is an easy to use camera, well suited for a novice. It is a compact camera with 3.2 mega pixel resolution. It has a 3x optical zoom lens and also captures movies (sound recording not available). Picture exposure, focus, white balance, and flash are all controlled automatically to produce a clear and sharp colour picture, so all the user has to do is point the camera and press the shutter button. ... ...for landscapes to telephoto for portraits. The camera's lens can also focus down to 4.3 inches for close-up photographs. Photos can then be downloaded to the computer using the supplied USB cable. This was the first digital camera I had used and I found the controls and functions very easy to pick up. I even had my mum using it and she is a real technophobe! I recently used it for a works outing, shooting 130 pictures of embarrasing monents and the ...

Advantages: Pretty compact and easy to use. Affordable Disadvantages: Heavy on batteries and not going for action shots
Having used digital cameras in the course of my job, it was time to bite the bullet and get one of my own. I researched all the relevant specs and decided to plump for the Minolta. A well known and respected brand. I was not disappointed. I wanted a camera with a decent zoom, excellent resolution and something that could fit easily in my handbag! This fulfils all 3 wishes - and a bit more. It comes with a memory card which allows you to take over ... ...only use this outside! The higher resolution gives fantastic shots and the menu options are dead easy to use. It pretty much tells you what to do! There are 2 self timer options which is handy if you have to move a small distance and the viewfinder and red eye reduction are both useful features. ...

Advantages: Excellent picture quality, easy menu system. Disadvantages: Delay before process, requires absolute stillness.
Bought this Digital camera after much much research considering performance and price.
I was desperate to buy something comparably to the Sony P72 which my brother bought purely on Sony brand name. Not having his money I must say I was not disappointed on the E323 performance.
The E323 is a very capable camera, particularly for portrait pictures. On using outdoors I have found the LCD screen to be quite difficult to see, so the viewfinder has to ... ...on most digital cameras.
Probably the most awkward aspect is its abilty to produce blurred photos due to camera shake or if the subject is in motion, although this can be eliminated by using the sport setting, this reduces the picture quality, albeit slightly. To avoid camera shake I now prefer to use the viewfinder, instead of the LCD screen. Resting the camera on the nose, gives it far more stability. The other annoyance is the delay between pressing ...

I purchased this camera in decemner 2003 from digitalfirst.co.uk . I use it as my main camera now ..for taking familly photos etc. It was very easy to use and setup with my PC and having printed out some prints with my photo printer i can definitely say that the quality is excellent.

Manufacturer's product description
Interested in large prints? If so, then the DiMAGE E323 is your "smart" choice. It not only captures detail-rich 3.2 megapixel images, but also knows how to expand shots to the stunning equivalent of 6 megapixels. Through a process called pixel interpolation, you'll get the data needed for prints larger than A3-size (297 mm x 420 mm / 11.7 inches x 16.5 inches, 150dpi). And whatever the image size, Konica Minolta expertise ensures sharp, clear colors. Thanks to a wide 12x zoom range, you can frame your shots as you like with a variety of scenes. 3x optical zoom brings a far-off subject within reach, and when that's not enough 4x digital zoom puts you even closer. The macro setting is great for shooting small subjects, such as flowers or miniatures, from as close as 11cm / 4.3inches (at WIDE position, from the front of the lens) It creates the type of shot where your subject stands out in sharp detail against a soft, unfocused background.Superb shots without a fuss are what the DiMAGE E323 delivers. When you're ready to shoot, it handles various factors for you. Focusing, exposure, white balance, and flash are adjusted automatically. If you want more than a still shot, switch over to movie mode. The DiMAGE E323 will keep recording a clip until your memory card gets full. Later, you can watch what you've recorded on the LCD monitor or hook up the camera to your TV. Images can be resized so that they're easier to send by e-mail. And the USB connection makes it simple to transfer shots to your computer.Show all the pictures in your memory card in one uninterrupted sequence, on the LCD monitor or a connected TV! Normally, a camera must be turned to view shots taken vertically, but not the DiMAGE E323. You can rotate an image on the LCD monitor, and it stays that way for easy checking later on. In Best Shot mode, you press the shutter button once to shoot 4 consecutive images. The images are then displayed simultaneously on the LCD monitor, so you can easily pick your favorite! Make printouts without a PC by connecting directly to a PictBridge-compliant printer. Images can be checked on the LCD monitor.
