As an active rock climber wanting to record my experiences as I was climbing, I was looking for a compact camera without a protruding lens and as high a pixel count as possible. I narrowed the field down to Konica's own X60 due to its fast start-up times, but on looking at Konica's web site was seduced by the features and massive pixel count of the new X1.
I bought the camera online for a very reasonable £179 and waited eagerly for it to arrive. Four days later on receiving the camera I was immediately struck by its simple design beauty - much like an Ipod - "less is more". It arrived in an attractive anodised red finish (silver and black also available) and I started playing straight away.
I do have a couple of gripes with this camera. Firstly it is quite slippy to hold with no features on the anodised body to add purchase and after a couple of days I found the lens cover mechanism would stick half open then half shut when closing down the camera although it does seem to have stopped doing this. I will have to monitor this and it may yet necessitate a return to the dealer.
Apart from these slight disappointments I have found the picture quality to be excellent especially from such a small package comparing well with the results from my digital SLR. The macro function is excellent, especially when used with a tripod that fits to the standard screw fitting on the base. Start-up times are not the fastest in class as are the speed of focussing prior to a photo being taken. This may put off those requiring instant "whip-out and shoot" ability, but for most users it is still nippy enough. The anti - shake feature is a definite boon for those lower light levels when a flash is inappropriate.
Uploading pictures to my Mac was a doddle. Slotting the camera into its supplied cradle attached via USB to the computer. The computer recognised the camera without needing drivers or software and uploaded the pictures into I-Photo quickly and without fuss. The PC was just as easy to use once the supplied drivers had been installed. Battery life seems very good considering the very bright 2.5" LCD that must be used at all times. I would recommend buying a second battery for extended trips as the cradle will charge the battery without the camera present meaning that you will never be without power for those unplanned photo opportunities. Buy at least a 512M SD card if you want decent photo capacity (176 full size pictures and 20 minutes of 640x480 mov video).
Picture quality has turned out to be superb with vibrant colours and crisp images under all settings. The focus system is by central spot which enlarges automatically when using telephoto mode(3x optical + 4x digital) and metering can be set to either spot or multi-segment mode. As well as the anti-shake feature the camera has all the bells and whistles that all good digital cameras posess. White balance, manual and auto settings, a range of useful preset programs including a superb macro function allowing as close as 2" focusing. Also useful if you use the camera for sports coaching is an ultra high speed multi shot function with which one can record up to 15, 640x480 images at 10 frames per second. excellent for analysing a tennis swing and so forth.
Overall I have been very impressed with this little gem, which offers astounding value for money as well as excellent features. The camera would not be out of place as a spare in a professionals pouch or slipped into a pocket at a trendy party or wedding.
Advantages: 6 Megapixels, great design, internal zoom mechanism Disadvantages: Bad noise ratio, blurry images, slow start-up, slow shutter speed
This camera was purchased mainly as a "pocket camera" with the intention of it being carried everywhere for those spur-of-the-moment snaps. Out of the box the camera is sleek and sexy. The finish, almost a pure mirror, certainly catches the eye.
With the manufacturers name of Minolta I was hoping to have another excellent camera. At this point (before my burglary!) I also had a Minolta 7Hi semi-pro digital camera. The quality of shots from the 7Hi ... ...I was hoping similar results from the X1. Sadly, I was greatly disappointed.
I took a few standard test shots with and without a flash; internal low-light, external bright light, close up macro shots, vibrant colours, high contrast, etc. Unfortunately I was so disappointed with every shot that within one hour of receiving the camera it was put back in it's box and was being sent back for a refund or alternative camera. Such a bitter disappointment ...

Advantages: Digital Zoom, Size of whole camera. Disadvantages: User Manual is thick and all English!
Lovely light camera that looks great!
I have given it a good rating only for a few reasons -
Its really fiddly trying to get the SD card in and out, and with the battery being in the same place, its the same for that too! Now I haven't had a problem with the door that opens that compartment, but, some reviews that I have read are saying it breaks easily and costs a fortune to get it fixed!
Also I haven't worked out yet, even thought I've had it ... ...dark areas or even outside at night.
Now the one thing that upset me was, whilst on honeymoon, I used the record feature and it caused problems with the camera.
It would not save what I had recorded and the whole camera crashed......I have been told that there could be 3 reasons for that.
1) SD card problems
2) Whilst going through airport xray etc machines it caused a malfunction with camera.
3) Just a camera misfortune.
I would note that ...

Well what can I say... this thing looks stunning, very stylish, very slim and packed full of features. We bought this during our holiday in Gran Canaria last year and it ha s had loads of use since. The 8Megapixel quality is superb although the quality od the 2.5 inch screen is not up to much, its only when you see the photo printed out for real or on the computer screen that you can really see how good it is. When it comes to features its also very ... ...video with sound. All I would recommend is to buy a large SD card to go with it, otherwise you will be forever going back to your computer to upload the images from the camera. It comes in a great looking cradle and when the camera sits in it looks so good next to my other gadgetry! Although the company was taken over by Sony a year or so sago they do not do repairs and ours is a little battered, the lens protector is a little delicate to so watch ...

Advantages: handy Disadvantages: pictures taken at night is not that good
...when we got his camera Konica Minolta Dimage x1 from my sister in law from the States. When i saw this camera i fell inlove with it because of it's style and color. It looks so sophisticated and very handy especially to people like us who likes to take pictures everytime there's something interesting. It is very easy to use with it's anti shake features which helps me a lot. It makes my shots clearer and not blurred. Also it has an SD memory card ... ...not worrying that it might get full anytime. On the other hand, i have tried to use it at night and have compared the quality of the picture that were taken in the morning. And to my dismay, it was not that good. You have to have a sufficient light for the picture to appear bright also. Another thing is the video feature of it, it is also will appear dark when you have not sufficient light while taking a shot. But, all in all i am satisfied with ...

Manufacturer's product description
Stylish and sophisticated the new 8 megapixel DiMAGE X1 is compact and very trendy. The DiMAGE X1 represents a combination of Konica Minolta's best imaging technologies including the revolutionary Anti-Shake technology and high-resolution movie clips.Using a 1/1.8-type CCD, the new Konica Minolta DiMAGE X1 features approximately 8,300,000 pixels, the highest resolution in a compact digital camera. The DiMAGE X1 enables users to take pictures with up to 3,264 x 2,448 pixels, creating crisp and detailed images for printed enlargements up to 8x10 inches in size. The DiMAGE X1's size is also small and thin. With folded optics technology, the size of a CCD unit dictates the camera's thickness. The slim and compact size of the DiMAGE X1's CCD allows for a body 0.8 inches in width, the first time for an DiMAGE X series model to achieve a profile less than 0.9 inches in size.To achieve optimum compatibility with its new optics, 8-megapixel resolution, and 1/1.8-type CCD, the DiMAGE X1 uses Konica Minolta's top image processing technology - CxProcess III. With this combination, the DiMAGE X1 is able reproduce images as clearly and naturally as they appear to a photographer's eye. Users can enjoy true colors and tones in their printed pictures even without image manipulation on a computer. For the first time ever in the Konica Minolta DiMAGE X series, the DiMAGE X1 offers an Anti-Shake system, which makes it even easier to take clear, steady shots of scenes that are normally difficult to shoot by hand. Offering unrivaled stability, the Anti-Shake system can compensate up to 3 EV exposure stops slower, making it ideal for taking handheld, wide-angle shots in low light conditions indoors, or after sunset with shutter speeds at 1/6 of a second at wide-angle setting.Unlike the Konica Minolta DiMAGE A and DiMAGE Z series cameras which use Konica Minolta's CCD-shift Anti-Shake technology, the DiMAGE X1 features a newly developed proprietary Anti-Shake system that counters shaking by tilting the entire optical unit combined with the CCD. It is designed to ideally complement the DiMAGE X1's folded optics technology to preserve the compact, thin body construction that the DiMAGE series is known for.To accommodate the high 8-megapixel resolution of the DiMAGE X1's 1/1.8-type CCD while still keeping the body as slim as possible, the DiMAGE X1 introduces a newly designed, non-protruding 3x optical zoom lens. This new lens system achieves a focal length of 7.7 to 23.1mm (equivalent to 37 to 111mm in 35mm format) and an aperture range from f/3.5 to f/3.8.The DiMAGE X1 is also equipped with a Super Macro mode. Using this function with the zoom lens at the wide-angle setting, users can bring the lens within 2 inches of their subject and capture vivid, super close-ups that fill the entire frame. Auto Macro shooting (the shortest 'normal' focus distance is 3.9 inches at wide-angle and 1.3 feet at telephoto), a conventional function of all the DiMAGE X series cameras, makes it easy to quickly catch close-up shots without switching functions. The DiMAGE X1 is equipped with a large, 2.5-inch LCD monitor that gives users a bright, clear view for framing shots and reading the menu screen. Using the Bright LCD backlight function allows photographers to set the screen 1.5 times brighter, so they can easily see the monitor in bright outdoor locations. Just like in the DiMAGE X50 and DiMAGE X60 digital cameras, the surface of the DiMAGE X1's LCD monitor is protected with an easy-to-maintain acrylic panel that can be easily wiped clean of dirt.Without a protruding zoom lens, the super-slim, flat body of the DiMAGE X1 measures just 3.7 x 2.7 x .8 inches (W x H x D), the first time the DiMAGE X series models have achieved a body profile less than 0.9 inches in size. The DiMAGE X1 is the first-ever Konica Minolta digital camera to come with its own convenient multifunction cradle. The cradle eliminates cumbersome cable arrangements and provides quick and easy connectivity for uploading and viewing images directly on a Computer or TV. The DiMAGE X1 multifunction cradle can also operate as a battery charger, which can either charge the battery by itself or the battery when it's inside the camera. The cradle can even position the LCD monitor forward so you can use it as an image viewer. For the first time ever in the DiMAGE X series, the DiMAGE X1 offers recording of smooth, high-resolution VGA (640x480 dots) movie clips with sound. Anti-Shake technology and auto focus combine to ensure amazingly clear images. While recording, users can even get even closer to the action using the 3x optical zoom without losing image quality. The DiMAGE X1 records movies in JPEG (MOV) format and is compatible with QuickTime for playing images back on a computer. The DiMAGE X1 makes taking clear, high-quality images effortless with a Digital Subject Program Selection that offers pre-programmed settings for seven common photo scenes: Portrait, Landscape, Sunset, Super Macro, Night Portrait, Night View, and Text. Users simply choose the mode best suited to their shooting conditions, and the DiMAGE X1 is ready in an instant with the optimum settings to turn that special moment into a beautiful memory.UHS Continuous Advance captures 640x480-pixel images at up to 10 frames per second at any image quality setting, making it ideal for capturing action shots such as a tennis or golf swing. In addition, the UHS Progressive Capture mode saves images from the last 1.5 seconds before releasing the shutter button (up to 15 images at 640x480). This means users won't miss photo opportunities during fast moving sporting events.
