I have been getting more and more into Photography over the past year and I bought a Film SLR last christmas and although the camera is excellent its expensive to keep buying and developing films only to find less than perfect results.
As a beginner to photography I am still trying to get to grips with focal lengths, shutter speeds etc and I often try new things out but its not until I get the film back I know if the results are any good or not and by then I cannot remember what settings I actually used for that photo... Its time to go digital and take advantage of instant results.
I had read a few reviews of the Z2 both in magazines and online and decided that the excellent picture quality, 4 megapixel resolution along with a full range of manual controls made it the perfect choice for me. It has all the settings my film SLR has and more but with the Z2 I can experiment with the settings and see instantly whether it worked how I hoped or not. This not only saves me a great deal of time but also money.
I bought the camera from dabs.com and it arrived very quickly as promised. In the box was the camera itself, a 16mb SD card, software, quick start quide, batteries, lens cap and tether and neck strap as well as an electronic version of the manual.
The 16mb card is next to useless, You can only fit a handfull of pictures on it in the highest resolution so the first thing youll have to do is get a bigger card, I got a 128mb card from ebay for £17 and it holds around 60 pictures in the the top setting.
I would of hope spending close to £300 (RRP is £350 i believe) a paper version of the manual rather than just the quickstart guide and a bigger SD card would of been supplied but once you use this camera you forgive them, its an absolute dream. The LCD screen is clear and bright, it has a fast start up time and feels good in the hand.
The body of tha camera is plastic and therefore the camera is very light which makes taking blury picture when hand holding the camera a real possibility so maybe a cheap mono or tripod might be in order but to be honest ive only experienced it a few times. The neck strap connects to the body via two "keyring" style loops which I was afraid would rub against the body of the camera causing scratches but after a few months there is no sign of this.
A lot of people report the camera as feeling cheap and nasty but i have to say that it feels fine to me.
As the downpoints go well, As stated the Z2 doesnt feature a conventional viewfinder. When you switch from the screen to the optical viewfinder and mirror drops down (ala SLR) and reflects the screens image to the viewfinder. This is great but it drops with one heck of clunk and i fear if anything goes wrong with this camera it will be this.
The battery life on the Z2 is excellent I recently put a fully charged set of 2350MHA AA's (it takes 4) into the camera and after taking 240 approx pics using flash partially but the screen constantly the batteries were not even half drained! wow!
If you want to progress from a point and snap digital camera, want to get into photography without the expense of film or simply want a top notch digital camera the Z2 fits the bill, I can say hand on heart its worth every penny and I am very happy with it.
