I bought the DiMAGE Z3 after seriously reviewing the Z1 features and coming a millimetre away from buying that model instead. What swung it for me was the Anti-Shake Feature which was new to this model, and I felt worth the extra £40 or so.
I am a simple point and shoot kind of girl (my husband would agree with the 'simple' bit, at least!) and although I do like reading the manuals, I can't be doing with them when they're not on paper in front of me, and as far as I am concerned, it's the only thing that lets the Z3 down - as with so many other purchases nowadays.
Luckily, however, it is a great, straightforward camera that needs little explanation (except some idiot didn't realise she had to manually lift the flash and wondered why the photos either wouldn't take or were incredibly shaky)!!!
The 12 times optical zoom is a fantastic facility and can be increase four-fold by the digital zoom facility.
The camera also features macro and supermacro settings, which enable you to take really good close-up shots (especially useful when photographing small things to put on Ebay - or if you're less sad than me, maybe a bit of nature-spotting)!
Basically, it is substantial, but not too bulky - this is NO credit card sized camera, but isn't as heavy as it looks either. It takes 4xAA batteries which have a reasonable life if you don't spend too long reviewing your art-work on the LCD screen.
It also take movie with sound and this works pretty well, but doesn't replace a camcorder. The only limit on how long it will record is the size of your SD card. I found that the only quirk on the video footage was that there was a few second delay from pressing the button to start recording to it actually recording. Before I got used to this, I kept missing the action, but it doesn't take long before you make allowances.
The camera came supplied with a 16mb SD card, but this only stored about 9 pictures, so I purchased a 256mb card quite cheaply from Ebay and that is a lot more satisfactory.
All in all, I am incredibly happy with my new camera and look like some kind of deranged tourist taking photos of anything and everything - just because I can!!!
