Advantages: Light weight Disadvantages: Anti-shake not too hot
...this was replaced with a Konica Minolta Z5. In theory this should have been better. It was somewhat lighter, and had higher resolution with 5 mega pixels. That was the theory, but the truth is somewhat different. The view screen is useless when used outdoors, as it cannot be tilted (as that on the Canon can) so is not useable whilst in direct sunlight.
Whilst the camera is reasonably easy to hold (it is clear that attention to detail has been given ... ...designed in such a way that it is not easy for left-handed people to use. The menu, however, is easy to access and fairly easy to use. The flip up flash unit is a good idea and works reasonably well. And the 12x optical zoom is good.
Apart from the problem with the useless screen, there is also a problem with the anti-shake mechanism. It simply doesn't work. Pictures are often blurred and out of focus. This was a problem that never occurred with ...

Advantages: Ease of use Disadvantages: Flimsy battery cover
I will start with the only downfall I have found on this camera, it's battery cover is a little flimsy and is already broken on mine. Apart from that, I recommend this camera on all counts. The picture quality is amazing, its usability is simple and it has the look of a professional piece of equipment. I once took a picture of a helicopter, which was quite far away, scooping water out of the sea in Greece and dropping it on a bush fire. The image ...

I haven't thought about digital cameras for a long time (after I got my KonicaMinolta dimage Z1 reviewed at this URL: http://www.ciao.co.uk/MinoltaDiMAGEZ1Review5433573/SortOrder/5). I was so happy with the quality of the pictures I took with this camera, that getting a new one was out of my mind; I've always been told that big lenses = great quality pictures, which was confirmed by my Minolta… Although, big lenses = big camera, which is a pain in itself… I am an avid fan of concerts, and "sneak" a camera in is always a tough job with the Minolta.
Then, a few months back, as I was walking in an airport duty-free, I saw a digital camera, big lens, but compact. As tiny as some digital cameras out there… the Panasonic Lumix TZ1. Price tag there: about £400. That calmed me down straight away...

Manufacturer's product description
Unlike conventional systems that use a corrective system built into the lens, DiMAGE Z5 features a unique Konica Minolta innovation that actually shifts the CCD to counteract the effects of camera shake. This avoids the sacrifices in optical quality conventional systems are forced to make, assuring you of the beautiful results you want, free of the blurring that so often spoils handheld photography. What's more, Anti-Shake is driven by an exclusive algorithm that offers stability over a wider range than conventional systems (2 to 3 shutter speeds slower than the standard estimate for a scene, depending on shooting conditions). When you're panning to follow your subject, unwanted Anti-Shake compensation can ruin your shot. DiMAGE Z5's advanced Anti-Shake system is designed to recognize the difference between panning movement and unwanted camera-shake, and apply compensation accordingly. Get close to the action, even from a distance with DiMAGE Z5's powerful Mega Zoom. The 12x optical zoom lens provides a focal length equivalent to 420mm to let you fill the frame with far-off subjects. Plus 4x digital zoom takes the number to an incredible 48x total zoom range. The camera's high-resolution 5.0-megapixel CCD and high-performance GT APO lens are teamed with Konica Minolta's proprietary CxProcess III image processing technology to ensure dazzling image quality. CxProcess III technology not only enhances edge definition and shadow/highlight detail, it also assures rich, natural, fully saturated colors, rendered just as the human eye perceives them. A big new 2-inch LCD monitor makes it easier to see your subject and compose your shots. The larger screen size also lets you see greater detail when you're reviewing images, and boosts the legibility of on-screen menus and function settings to assure greater operating ease. DiMAGE Z5 sets a new standard for speed and accuracy in autofocusing. Thanks to Video AF and a continuous lens drive, DiMAGE Z5 focuses in an astonishingly fast 0.2 seconds at wide angle and 0.3 seconds at telephoto. No fuss, no waiting - just beautiful results, automatically.

Although Konica Minolta have now ceased making cameras, there are still a few of these around (and warranty/service has been handed over to Sony).
