Ok, so laser printers are more expensive than inkjets. BUT; when you look at the saving that can be made on consumables it starts to be a bit of a no brainer as to which you buy!
this printer cost me a little over £200 delivered, which was a great deal, they are usually around the £250+ area but still a good deal at that.
It's got a pretty strange layout, that whilst totally functional is not that pretty, it's got a sort of front-side face, which is the pretty bit with the logos and control panel on, and a back panel which is just plain, but the other two 'ends' leave you wondering which way round your supposed to put the printer, the paper sits in an open feeder, and bit like a manual feeder only for lots of sheets, on one side, which also has the power and interface connection on, so if you want to be able to replace paper you have to see a big sheet of steel with the connection sticking out? minolta dropped the ball a bit there.
I have one other little gripe that minolta really should listen to: "please, please put a back light on the display" the display is awkward to read except in very good light.
The installation was very easy - especially important on my mixed OS home network. wizards for windows are included on the software CD and a pretty easy PPD install is available for linux/unix which worked straight away. thats a rarity!
The machine has one or two disadvantages over inkjets though, firstly it takes a while to wake up. when you switch it on it can take up to 5 minutes to be ready to print, although it more usually about 2 minutes, and it tends to make quite a lot of noise going about it. secondly its outout is not quite as good as a top photo inkjet, but it's good. very good. to give a comparison, it is way way better than my canon BJ4400, and on a par with my epson photo 700 inkjet (both now redundant!)
It's not the fastest box in the world when it comes to crunching an image to print. It has been known to take almost 10 minutes to chuck out a detailed full colour full sheet A4 photograph, but the results are worth it. It seems to print quicker from linux though(?)
the black output is as good as i've ever seen from a sub £1000 printer and it is pretty close to it's stated speed for ordinary black and white word documents.
the driver software is easy to use - although it could be said it's a bit basic, there is no colour correction facility for example, which could be useful (present on more expensive printers)
Given the choice, i'd buy another one!
