I was shocked when I looked on the product page and found that no one had done an op on this product. So as this product has 2 of my favourite things in it I thought I would be the one to oblige! The product in question is: Kraft Philadelphia LIGHT cream cheese – the Garlic and Herb variety. Two of my favourite things being cheese and garlic, so now you all know that you are safe as I am not a vampire. I just can not help it – garlic is wonderful! Anyway, back to the point of this opinion…
…I am unfortunately always trying to diet but cheese is one of my downfalls. Luckily one of the things I love to do is find a good cream cheese and fill a celery stick with it and munch away. Yes I know that at this point many of you are making gagging faces as you hate the thought of celery but I actually like it! (Yes really!) My problem being that nearly all things that have cheese as an ingredient are nearly always going to be bad for you * sob sob *
Then I stumbled across Philadelphia light in the garlic and herb variety which of course I had to buy. It was £1.19 for a 200g pot. The pot itself was predominantly grey in colour with green diagonal stripes on it. The lid was clear plastic so that through it you could see a foil covering, green in colour with the product name on the top. Round the sides of the rectangular shaped tub you had various things: the two longer sides had the Kraft Philadelphia light logo on along with a picture of some herbs and two garlic cloves. The first of the shorter side had a big ‘V’ in red and white on it which of course meant that it was suitable for vegetarians. Also there was a green and white arrow sign in a circle but I am unsure of what this means. There was some numbers and letters and a little bit of advice which stated that you should eat it within 5 days of opening in order to eat the cheese at its best.
The second short side had the careline number and contact details on it: Telephone - 0808 1000678 UK only E-mail – philadelphia.uk@krafteurope.com Website – www.philadelphia.co.uk Address – Kraft foods UK, Freepost SWC 3320, Cheltenham, GL50 3ZZ.
A lot of very detailed information I thought for such a small product. But in a way it gave me security and trust in it.
On the bottom you have the barcode, ingredients and nutritional information. For once the ingredients are simple: additional to the cream cheese the added ingredients are: Garlic, stabilisers E410, E407 and herbs. Nice and simple I thought. The nutritional information is rather simple too: Per 100g; Energy – 180kcals, Protein – 7.2g, Carbs – 3.4g, Fat – 15.5g, Fibre – 0.2g, Sodium – 0.4g.
If you are a member of a slimming club and using a ‘points’ system then the above works out to be 5 points for 100g (half the tub) which personally I do not think is bad. Rather good in fact. If you are on another diet then I still think you could work this into it without too much trouble.
The important bit…
My first impression was the smell. It smelt garlicky and fresh and really quite yummy which meant that my expectations had been lived up to so far. I got my knife and scraped some out and the cheese was a lovely white colour with speckles of green from the herbs. It was light and fluffy and I actually talked myself into believing that this was wicked stuff and I was in fact being naughty (well everything that fits into your diet is usually yuk so I thought I’d try this approach). I spread it into my celery then I crunched - I munched and groaned in excstacy like a bunny rabbit starved and eating for the first time – ever!!
Obviously that was a slight exaggeration but I think you get the idea, don’t you? I liked it and I will definitely be buying this again. The cheese was creamy and the garlic was tasty yet not overpowering as in some products. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I am now on a mission to hunt down, taste and write opinions on all of the garlic cream cheese’s available – so watch this space!
Advantages: Tasty, spreadableand scrummy Disadvantages: It gets eaten too quickly
...Philadelphia is made by Kraft and is advertised on TV, although not recently, by a couple of dippy women – yes you remember the ads now don’t you. I bought a 200g pot for £1.29. The pots are about 3 x 4.5 inches and about an inch tall. They are mainly grey in colour with green highlights. A clear plastic lid covers a foil top. The clear plastic lid is there to reseal the pot once you have opened the foil bit – the foil is fairly easy to open, unlike ... ...bit flimsy though and it always seems to get knocked off in the fridge which means the open end of the cheese dries out. This is a shame because it is the only downside to a quality product.
The cheese is described as a ‘medium fat soft cheese with garlic and herbs’ – what more can I say. Well, when you first open the foil you are greeted with a very herby aroma and a hint of soft processed cheese. I can’t detect any garlic in the smell. The cheese ...

Advantages: It's got garlic Disadvantages: Who cares about the herbs
...cheese. This has the usual Kraft logo as well as the oval shape in blue with the word Philadelphia in blue too and under that Garlic & Herbs in green writing. Also under that is a few leafy things, which one would presume is the herbs, and a couple of cloves of garlic. Even Kraft must not really care about the herbs as they can’t even be bothered to tell you what herbs are actually in it. All it says in the ingredient list is that there are herbs ... ...as I don’t really care either what herbs they are.
So not caring about herbs lets move right on and dig in …
Thick, creamy, white, garlic goodness spread on crusty bread in HUGE dollops. Mmmmmmmm yummy !! It’s smells fresh not like sweaty socks as some cheeses do and is pleasantly garlicky ( I think that is how it’s spelled ) though being me I would always opt for just a tad more. And yeah there are the green bits, which are no doubt bits of herbs.

Advantages: Good packaging, fantastic taste, Good use of ingredients Disadvantages: None at all in my opinion.
...of the cover has the Kraft logo on it as well as the name of the product, Philadelphia with garlic and herbs; this is in attractive looking lilac writing. The front of the product also gives some nutritional information and the background picture is that of a blue sky and green hilltops. The back of the product has ingredient listings, further nutritional information, storage instructions and allergy advice.
When it came to opening the packaging ... ...go! The cheese is quite thick in texture but it is also quite smooth which makes it really easy to spread. Again, like my friend I decided to have my Philadelphia on a bagel and I did find the cheese just glided onto the bagel with no real effort required.
The cheese is a dull white colour but it is also speckled with the green herbs and has a great look about it. You could smell the garlic which at first did panic me as I was going to be eating ...

Kraft Philadelphia Light Garlic and Herbs is a medium fat soft cheese made in Germany. I like to taste cheese of different nations because cheese can taste very different. Price and Package ------------------------- This cheese comes in a white oval plastic tub which contains 300 g of soft cheese. The lid is silver coloured plastic. The tub can be opened and re-closed easily and keeps the cheese fresh. Naturally it has to be refrigerated. Its price ... ...think. Now (24 November 2009) it is on offer buy 1 and add 1 free. Taste and texture ---------------------- It is a white thick cheese that can be spread easily. There are small pieces of green herbs in it. The garlic cannot be observed as it has very mild taste but the herbs give the cheese a very nice taste. There is a secret mixture of herbs in it and none of them is dominating so it has a very pleasant taste. Ingredients -------------- Added ...

Advantages: Mild garlic taste but lovely creamy flavours and thick texture Disadvantages: Price
...creamy soft cheese manufactured by Kraft (a massive manufacturer of a whole array of food brands).
I like flavoursome cheese and seeing as I love soft cheese with flavouring like garlic, chives, herbs etc...this looked really appealing - Kraft Philadelphian Light Garlic and Herbs.' By 'Light' they actually mean, less fat and calories than the original. It's not 'low fat' and the product even details it to be - 'a medium fat soft cheese with garlic ... ...2.3g of saturated fat per 30g serving. I don't know how much a 30g serving rquates to; I'll guess it's roughly one tablespoon and a half. That's ok if you have delicate taste buds and this amount will satisfy you but I love strong flavours and could easily have a lot more. On the other hand, I don't like really creamy things and as this is a 'medium fat spft cheesey' it is a lot thicker and creamier than the low fat soft cheese spreads so I find ...
