If you have read any of my previous reviews then you will have seen that I sometimes struggle with what to have for my lunch everyday. I tend to get bored quite quickly with food and whilst I have fads of items where I cannot get enough of them, not long after I am soon fed up. I have recently been on a bit of a soup fad but know that before long I will tire of it. Whilst going to heat my soup up in the works kitchen I saw a colleague toasting herself a bagel and then spreading something on it…. This something was Philadelphia Light with added bazil!
So a new idea for my lunch and off I went to my local Supermarket, Tesco to pick myself a tub up. I have never had Kraft’s Philadelphia before but have often treated myself to some soft cheeses, especially at Christmas time. A couple of reasons drew me to the product, the fact that it was the ‘light’ option and also that it had added bazil. a firm favourite of mine!
As previously mentioned I purchased my 200g tub of Philadelphia from Tesco and it cost me £1.30. You can buy the shops own brand of soft cheese but I decided to go with what I had seen my work colleague use and she held a high opinion of it so I stuck to the branded version. The Kraft’s Philadelphia are currently on offer in Tesco for the deal of buy 2 tubs for the price of £2.00 which is a great deal in my opinion.
The packaging of this product is really good. The Philadelphia comes in an oval shaped plastic pot, which is white in colour, and if you clean it out after you have finished with it then it can be recycled. The pot also has a transparent plastic lid covering the top of the product adding protection to the cheese. There is also a protective silver foil lid over the cheese and this also has front cover on it. I felt it offered a really good protection to the cheese and once opened the cheese stayed really fresh and soft as it had these protective layers on it.

When it came to opening the packaging you just have to break the seal and away you go! The cheese is quite thick in texture but it is also quite smooth which makes it really easy to spread. Again, like my friend I decided to have my Philadelphia on a bagel and I did find the cheese just glided onto the bagel with no real effort required.
The cheese is a dull white colour but it is also speckled with the green herbs and has a great look about it. You could smell the bazil but it did not overpower the product, but simply complimented it, which I was really impressed with. The herbs also worked well with the cheese, making a fantastic flavour in my opinion. I have seen in foods where they use salt as flavouring and this is so unhealthy so using added bazil, as an extra flavouring was a great idea.
The cheese itself was really thick but like I said really smooth to eat. It had a lovely creamy flavour about it and it was quite filling as well. It worked really well on my bagel and on a cold winters afternoon my lunch was suddenly a little bit more appetising and interesting!
A few pieces of nutritional information on the product are as follows: (Per serving)
As you can see from the above figures, the cheese is a lot healthier than a full fat version. The calorie content is quite impressive, especially as I previously mentioned that it still leaves you felling really full.
In summary, this is a really good product. The packaging is attractive and instantly catches your eye. The cheese itself is really appetising and tasty and most importantly leaves me feeling full and fulfilled of my lunch break. The addition of the bazil is a really good twist and all the flavours work well together.
It can only be 5 out of 5 from me for this great product!
Advantages: A tasty alternative Disadvantages: None for me
== KRAFT PHILADELPHIA LIGHT BASIL ==
=== Introduction. ===
I was never a lover of Philadelphia Cheese in any form. My daughter loved it on toasted bagels but personaly I found the taste very bland and stayed clear. Then in 2006 I started doing (what was then called) the No Count plan with Weight Watchers. (This plan then became Core and is now lurking somewhere under the muddy waters of the Discover plan as Simply Filling.) Anyway, I digress, on ... ...tub and then in 1985, Kraft ( the owners of the cheese) brought in a low fat version and in 2001 this extra light version came into being - it was then 'improved' in 2006. === The Cheese. ===
Philadelphia Light is a smooth, mild, white cream cheese that is made from pasteurized milkfat. It differs from soft cheese like Brie in the fact that it is not matured and has to be eaten fresh. Obviously this cheese is 'light' so is less creamy than the original, ...
