I only came about this product last week when shopping at Tesco's. I only noticed them because they were in special offer and since trying them, they have become one of my favourite snacks. Philadelphia Splendips are very similar to Dairylea dunkers but they also have a sweet variety as well as savoury.
Philadelphia Splendips There are four varieties of Philadelphia Splendips. These are Thai Sweet Chilli, Chives, Cheesecake and Nachos. Philadelphia Splendips come in a container similar to Dairylea Dunkers except that they have three compartment rather than two. Half of the container if taken up with the 'dipper' section and the other half is split into two sections, containing cheese and then whatever
flavour you have picked. The container has a foil lid which peels off and is easy to remove. The containers themselves are fairly small so I find them convenient for packed lunches and to have as snacks.
Price I buy these from Tescos where they cost 98p per pack. Recently they were in special offer and you got 2 for 98p.
The Different Varieties
Cheesecake This variety comes with mini wheat meal biscuits as the 'dippers'. The cream cheese is reduced fat Phildelphia and in the other compartment you have Raspberry Coulis. I thought that this combination worked really well together and was enjoyable although it still wasn't as nice as normal cheesecake. Personally, I think I prefer the savory versions of this snacks.
Chives. This variety comes with crunchy chive flavoured crackers. The cream cheese is reduced chive Philadelphia and in the other compartment in a tangy tomato chutney. To be honest, on first opening this one, I thought it was a bit odd with the chive cream cheese and tomato chutney being put together but surprisingly it worked really well and the flavours complimented each other.
Nachos This variety comes with mini Tortilla Chips and reduced fat Philadelphia. In the other compartment is a mild salsa dip. This snack is very similar to having Nachos and I really enjoyed this flavour, the mild salsa sauce made the cream cheese taste even creamier.
Thai Sweet Chilli This variety comes with mini flat rice cakes and reduced fat Philadelphia. In the other compartment is a Thai Sweet Chilli dip. This is by far my favourite flavour. I think the two flavour compliment each other so well because you get a slight kick of flavour from the sweet Chilli which works really well with the cream cheese. My only complaint with this variety is that the sweet chilli dip is quite runny and tends to fall off the rice cake. I found a way round this by loading on the cream cheese first and then dipping it in the Chilli sauce.
My Opinion Having tried all four varieties I can easily say that the Thai Sweet Chilli was by far my favourite. I enjoyed all the other flavours and was surprised to find that the Chive one was actually quite nice, despite me thinking that the chive and tomato flavours would not go together. The cheesecake variety was probably my least favourite, although it was nice, I think I prefer real cheesecake and certainly prefer the savoury versions of this snack. The packaging is nice and compact with a simple foil led which comes off easily. Each compartment is just the right size for the amount of cheese and various flavours you get, you can load up the 'dippers' with quite a large amount of cheese and it lasts longer than you would expect. Nutritional Information I was surprised to find that this snack only contains 7grams of fat. The calorie content varies between each variety but the highest calorie is 196 (for the Cheesecake flavour) which I still think isn't too bad considering the snacks are quite filling.
Summary I will definitely be buying these again. I think they are good value for money and you also don't feel too guilty eating them as the calories aren't too bad. My only grumble is that sometimes the 'dipper' is a little bit too big to fit in the other compartment, meaning you need to break off a bit before you can dip it in the cheese and sauces. I would definitely recommend this product to any Philadelphia fan.
