Details: This is the 3rd book in the 'Riftwar Legacy' (Kronder: The Betrayal, Krondor: Assassins and this book Kronder: Tear of the Gods) series. This series is based immediately after the original 'Riftwar' (Magician, Silverthorn, A Darkness at Sethanon) trilogy.
The Riftwar Legacy series tens towards telling the tale of the younger members of the cast and the main characters in this book are James (Jimmy the Hand), William (Son of Pug) and a new character, Jezharra (New court magician).
The book continues the story of the fight against the evil influences of 'Sidi' an elusive character who is doing every thing he can to upset the power base in the Kingdom, from it's lowest, The Mockers (The criminal fraternity) to the power in the Palace.
Strange things are accuring in a small village north of Krondor and a new, seemingly invincible enemy is causing trouble in the streets of the city. William, James and Jazharra must hunt down the protagonists and face the evil behind them.
To write this review kills me. Before doing so I must let you know that I am A huge fan on the Raymond Feist novels. I have read his first novel, 'Magician', 7 times and all the other except the 'Krondor' series a minimum of 3 times. I just love them and can let myself become completely immersed in the story.
I have to say though that even though the first 2 'Krondor' books, 'Krondor: The Betrayal' and 'Krondor: The Assassins' weren't his best works, the latest offering from my favourite author, 'Krondor: Tear of the Gods' does STINKETH.
I read the book in one day it was such a simple plot and it seems to be written as if it were aimed at an 8 year old reading it. I believe that it is the shortest book that Feist has produced so far and having read it I am not surprised. What has happened to all his descriptive powers and the ability to transfer the reader into his world? It was written in such simplistic style with almost no descriptive element. It was just event after event after event. Almost along the lines of....and then they did this...and then they went there...and then they met so-and-so. I couldn't believe it. One of the worst parts of the book was the inclusions of vampires in the story. After the creative creations in previous books, this seemed like such a cop-out.
I know the 'Krondor' series was based on the previously released Computer Games, but that is no excuse for a proven, excellent author to let the narrative suffer.
If you are considering reading the Feist Novels for the first time, please don't start with this one. Please start at the beginning, with Magician and read all the other before you read the 'Krondor' series. Get yourself hooked on the immaginative and complex universe he creates before reading this and the other books in the 'Krondor' series.
I was so dissapointed with this book. As always I was awaiting it's release for many months and felt cheated after reading it. Please don't let me put you off reading the Feist novels, they are truely excellent. This one is the exception, not the rule.
In all good conscience I can not recommend this book and certianly not to a new Feist reader, but I am sure that a long term fan will want to read it for the sake of completeness and I will probably read it again as I go through all the books again at some time in the future.
I feel bitterly dissapointed.
