I do love a cup of fresh coffee, and am famous amongst my friends for never offering instant - I only ever make or drink fresh coffee. So over the years, as you can imagine, I have got through a fair number of coffee machines. I've been the proud owner of several different filter makers, esspresso and cappucino makers and had never found the perfect one. Until now!

I bought this Krups coffee maker at a large electrical store a year ago for £69.99. It's the first time I've ever had a filter maker with a thermal jug (as opposed to a glass jug) so I did wonder if it would be any good.

The maker itself is tall as opposed to the 'squat' shape which is more usual. It measures 40cm high x 20cm wide x 30cm deep (approx) and fits easily into a small corner. It is black, with a chrome coloured jug and has a modern appearance.

It has no 'airs and graces', just a water tank at the top, a 'swing out' section for the filter coffee, the thermal jug which sits underneath and an on/off button.

There is no hotplate - rather than the coffee sitting on a heated surface and 'stewing', the jug keeps it at the perfect temperature without spoiling the flavour. Although it does cool down eventually, I have drunk coffee 4 hours after making it and it tasted fine.

As with all makers, all you have to do is put the required amount of cold water into the tank, add the coffee to a disposable filter which sits inside a filter holder, make sure the jug is in place and then switch it on. It produces up to 10 cups of coffee in about 5 minutes, and as a safety feature, if the coffee is left, it switches itself off after about 10 minutes.

I will admit to cheating a bit; my last coffee maker had an everlasting filter, and I transferred it to this coffee maker to save having to keep buying the filter papers. So far it has worked well!

The filter holder is removeable for washing, as are the filter jug and lid. I usually wash it by hand, but the opening in the jug is quite narrow, and whilst I have no problem with it, my husband can't get his hand inside to wash it up properly.
Either this is true, or he's 'had one over on me' and has escaped the washing up for the past year!
I would imagine that the jug and filter holder would be fine in the dishwasher, but the jug lid really needs to be cleaned by hand as it has a 'twisted' section which probably wouldn't be cleaned thoroughly enough by machine.

All in all, it's definitely the best coffee maker I've ever had, and should it 'shuffle off this mortal coil' in the future I would search out an identical model to take it's place.
