A few weeks went by and my daughter pestered me to buy a machine which I flatly refused to do (my hubby drinks only coffee). She arrived at my house with her Dolce Gusto machine so that I could try it for one week – she was adamant that I would love it, so I reluctantly agreed.
My nice rustic-type kitchen now had this modern black and silver coffee machine on one of its work surfaces and, at first, I thought it would look totally out of place but strangely enough it doesn’t. Some people might think it is “futuristic” looking but it actually reminds me of a black and white cat sitting on the bench sipping milk! My daughter duly showed me how to work the machine and left a selection of drinks to sample.
I have to inform you that I became addicted to it and consequently I kept her machine and bought her a new one as she had originally wanted a black and red machine.
When purchasing the machine you should get a starter pack containing various coffee pods and dried milk. You also get a small cup and saucer which is mainly for the espresso and a glass cup for the latte and cappuccino varieties.
The machine is simple to operate. There is a transparent plastic container at the back of the machine which easily comes off and should be filled with fresh water. There are two settings at the front – switch the lever to red for hot and to blue for cold. I understand that cold drink pods were due to be promoted this summer but, as yet, I haven’t seen any. The beauty about this machine is that it only heats the water when the lever is switched to red so you actually get a nice fresh cup of coffee. The cold water passes with pressure over the heating element part of the machine. The pod is inserted into what I can only described as a large-type spoon which clicks into the machine then when the lever is moved into the red position you can hear the pod being pierced and then in approximately 20-30 seconds you have your cup of coffee. The only downside to this machine is that you physically have to watch it or otherwise it will just keep sending through hot water until the plastic container is empty. When making latte or cappuccino you must first place the milk container into the machine, let it fill about half the cup and then insert the coffee pod. You do learn the strength that suits you. There is a black plastic container which has a detachable perforated inner section which you should keep by the side of the Dolce Gusto and this is for collection of the used pods. One tip though – make sure you empty it every day as I left it with some pods in for a couple of days and there was a horrible sour milk smell (the weather was particularly hot).
At present, Dolce Gusto produce:
Latte Macchiato (A combination of steamed frothy milk with a layer of full-bodied espresso which is sweetened slightly). The box contains 16 pods – 8 coffee/8 milk
Espresso (A full-bodied coffee which produces a smooth cream-type film on top which gives it its trademark) – not sure how many pods in a box as I haven’t bought this but my guess would by 16.
Cappuccino (Another frothy steamy milk combined with a rich brown shot of espress). Did you know that the name Cappuccino originates from the Order of the Capuchin friars who dressed in brown robes and covered their heads with white hats). Again, the box contains 16 pods – 8 coffee/8 milk.
Caffe Lungo (Espresso with added length! Described as a delicious and smooth taste with a velvety creamy layer). It certainly has a creamyish layer but this coffee is too strong for me but my husband likes it a lot. Box contains 16 pods.
Chocolate (Quite a strong chocolate flavour) – not one of my favourite chocolates – not creamy enough and I think it should be mixed with a cream pod but the box comes with 16 pods of chocolate
My favourites are Latte Macchiato and Cappuccino, my husband’s favourite was Caffe Lungo but he has now decided he likes my Latte Macchiato too! I limit myself to having one cup of coffee per day as my treat to myself and I have to say I really do enjoy it.
Each box of pods retails at £2.99 in Sainsburys and this is expensive, I have to admit, but as a treat it is great. However, just think how much you pay for a latte or cappuccino in a café so in comparison you could also say it is cheaper than “drinking” out. I haven’t had a problem obtaining my boxes of pods.
I bought the machine at Makro and paid £59 (+VAT) although my daughter had paid about £90 for the Dolce Gusto. A lot of money but in comparison to some of the coffee machines on sale, it could be classed as quite cheap! I have seen other coffee machines retail at £200+.
Advantages: Can customize your drinks exactly how you want them. Disadvantages: Suagr in milk pods, Yuk!
I love coffee and spend a fortune in places like Starbucks and Costa's so thought I'd save a bit by buying this machine and making my own!
I ordered it on Amazon as that was the cheapest price around, £79.99. It arrived a few days later.
It was very simple to set up, really just unwrap everything, plug the unit in. Take the water holder to the sink (it even has a handle to carry) fill with water and sit on the back of the machine. Switch on and ... ...set up guide. So within 2 mins, you are ready to make your first drink.
The unit is not large and I think looks very modern and stylish in any kitchen. It does leak (well hasn't yet). It has an adjustable stand which slips easily into different height notches, so you can use different size cups without splashing drinks everywhere.
The pack contains a welcome pack, which is a few of each drink pods to try, plus a latte glass and cappuccino cup, ...

I bought this machine on the strength of the many other excellent reviews from customers here on dooyoo who are clearly much more expert than me about coffee machines. I am adding this review to say that if you're like me (i.e. a complete idiot in the kitchen), but want superb coffee, instantly with no hassle or effort, this is the machine for you. If I can work it, anyone can! You cannot knock the looks either. I am very fond of retro gadgets and ... ...well. It's not as ugly or space consuming as some of it's competitors.
I have never been tempted to try any instant coffee machines and tend to rather spend a fortune on buying my cappuccinos in cafes everyday before going to work. But that is definitely a thing of the past. This machine is fantastic and so easy to use - even an idiot like me can throw a delicious cappuccino together after 5 minutes of unwrapping the box!
What about the price of ...

Advantages: Quick, clean and easy to use Disadvantages: The flavour of the drinks may not be to everyone's taste.
...liked the taste of the Krups Dolce Gusto drinks, and were so impressed with the efficiency of the machine that we decided to get one. The Krups Dolce Gusto weighs 3 kilograms and is small, very compact with round shapes. The exact dimensions are 21.4cm(W) x 31.5cm(H) x 33cm(D). It probably wouldn't look out of place in The Jetsons' kitchen, as it has a certain futuristic look about it. We got the black-silver one, but there were also red-silver and ... ...know for sure that you like their taste. Krups Dolce Gusto coffee machines can be bought from several stores including Argos, John Lewis and Sainburys and usually cost between £79.99 and £89.99. A box of capsules costs around £2.99 and can be found at the major supermarkets. ...

Advantages: Makes good quality coffee, cheap to use Disadvantages: None
I've had this coffee maker for over a year now and I have to say I'm very happy with it. It looks good in the kitchen, being black and silver, made from high quality plastic so is easily wiped clean, and has a good variety of flavours widely available, and reasonably priced.
I received this machine as a wedding present, but I believe that it now costs around £90. At the time it was coming with a free accessories pack, comprising coffee capsules, ... ...far as I'm aware the product is still available with this accessories pack.
Coffee capsules are available in the following flavours:
Cappuccino
Latte
Expresso
Lungo
Chococin o
Mocha
Cappuccino Ice - Summer only
Lungo Decaffeinato - limited edition
Expresso Intenso - limited edition
I have tried most of these flavours and have found them to be close to the real deal available in coffee shops.
Most of these are available for around £3 for ...
