When I left school at the age of 15 I walked straight into a modern apprenticeship with Kwik-Fit which I started in August 2003. I had always wanted to keep cars on the road and doing a modern apprenticeship with a company like this seemed a good way to get into the business.
I got positioned in the Whitley Bay branch which was just round the corner from my house.
To start with I went on a training course in Edinburgh with 5 other apprentices and I was one of only 2 of them who actually knew how to wire a plug! We spent 4 days in Edinburgh but only spent 4 hours learning how to fit tyres!! Yet when we started in our centres we were given the responsibility of fitting tyres and fitting punctures, which if not done properly is life threatening.
My pay rate was dyerbolical, I was getting paid £94.50 a week to work 8am till 5pm tuesday through to Saturday which is 40 hours! and in them 40 hours I was working outdoors practically on the seafront in the north-east coast of England.
On top of that I got persistantly bullied by my mentor, my manager and the other apprentice.
The only reason I bought tyres etc. from Kwik-Fit while working there was because I got a 50% staff discount, yet I could have still got the tyres cheaper elsewhere, the tyres for my Pug 106 at Kwik-Fit are £80 yet from north-eastern tyres and exhausts they are only £35 for the same brand.
Kwik-Fit fitters also cut corners to get a job done faster and fit dodgy tyres etc. just to get your money there and then.
Have you ever seen a Kwik-Fit fitter use an air gun to take off and put on your wheel nuts, also do they check the torque settings and tyre pressures for your car, I don't think so, they generalise everything.
If you want my advice steer clear of this company, they are a liability!!!!
