In summer 2007 I bought a
car battery from
Kwik Fit which came with a three year guarantee. In July 2008, less than a year later, the battery failed while I was on holiday abroad and I had to buy and carry a new battery from a local garage.
On my return to England I went to the Kwik Fit garage that sold me the battery and asked for a refund because I had already a replacement. Kwik Fit said they would replace the battery but not refund, because they said that I could have gone to a Kwik Fit garage with the failed battery and fetched back a new one. I explained that I had not been in the UK when the Kwik Fit battery failed so there were no local Kwik Fits from which to obtain a replacement, but they still refused to refund.
Consider the inconvenience while on holiday of finding one's car will not start, trying to find out why, having to walk to the nearest garage and carrying a fresh battery back to the car. One imagines that when something is bought with a three year guarantee it should last for at least that length of time, and if it fails the person who sold that article should at least offer an apology when he is given an indication of the inconvenience caused.
I believe Kwik Fit are selling poor quality batteries using the get-out that if the battery fails they can always replace it with another poor quality battery and yet another until the three year guarantee is exhausted. They are making a nonsense of what the phrase "three year guarantee" suggests to most consumers.
