When it comes to chocolate bars and biscuits we are spoilt for choice, even the best known brands are diversifying with different variations of Kit Kats a regular purchase on the benniash shopping list. When I went to Kwik Save the other day I really wanted a light snack rather than a large bar so decided to try the shops own branded Nutty Bars. What attracted me to the bars was the fact that they are not too large, more like the size of a chocolate biscuit such as a Penguin, so just over half the size of a normal chocolate bar such as a Mars. They also came in a pack of four, so a good few days worth…or about an hour if they were particularly nice!!! If you go into a Kwik Save don’t expect the bar to jump out at you. You’ll find it with the rest of the chocolate bars but its mainly brown packaging, only with a animated version of the bar on the cover, doesn’t do the product justice and isn’t a great marketing tool in promoting them.

The bar itself is a blatant copy of Snickers (made by Mars). The bottom layer is soft nougat, containing peanuts and topped off with caramel all in a chocolate covering. The taste is very similar to that of Snickers too – although I believe that the problem with this bar is that there is far too much nougat, with not enough nuts and caramel. It is too easy to compare this to Snickers where I feel they have the balance of the main ingredients much better. In terms of taste this bar is very enjoyable with the combination of the nougat and caramel not as sickly as it first sounds. The taste of the chocolate covering is actually lost after a few chews with the nougat, caramel and nuts being an overpowering combination.

Overall I found this chocolate bar very enjoyable and the size is ideal for anyone looking to cut down on his or her chocolate intake, or looking for a smaller snack -maybe for a packed lunch. Unfortunately these bars are not sold separately but at 59p for four (less than 15p each) you really can’t go wrong, although I am surprised they don’t do a larger bar and compete with Snickers on price. Anyone who likes Snickers will definitely like this. The bar is nothing new and in the current market there are a lot better bars to choose from, however the excellent price will ensure it finds its way into my basket on several more occasions in the future.

Obviously being a home branded product you will only be able to pick this up in Kwik Save, a store locator can be found at www.kwiksave.co.uk. Although I haven’t tried them yet, they also do caramel and coconut versions for the same price.

NOTE: Obviously this contains nuts, but is suitable for vegetarians…unless you are a vegetarian with a not allergy of course!!
