Full review

I went shopping for some cereal a few weeks ago at my local Kwik Save, we usually have a few different varieties in the cupboard and one of these is usually a box of Kellogg’s cornflakes. When I saw that there was none of these on the shelf in the shop, instead of asking a member of staff to see if there were any boxes in the storage room, I picked up a bag of Kwik Save’s own brand. We usually avoid cheap cereal, as some can be a waste of money, and get thrown straight into the bin, but because there were no others to chose from, and I was in a rush, I bought them!

For anyone who doesn’t already know, I will explain a little about Kwik saves own brand. It is basically the plain packaging, cheaper version of most every day items, bread, cereals, beans, margarine etc, and it is called ‘Simply’, cause that’s what they are, simply items without the fancy packaging, which you can buy for less. The simply range all have a white and red packaging.

The Flakes

On the packaging these are described as, Golden Toasted Flakes of corn.
When you first open the pack of these cornflakes, you can tell just by looking at them, that they are a cheap brand. The colour of the flakes is a really, really light orange/yellow one, and definitely nothing golden about them. The flakes are also a bit on the small side.

The Taste

When I tried these for the first time, and with the milk added, they did taste of corn but had a slightly salty aftertaste and I felt that there was something missing. I know that they are a cheap brand, but compared to say, Kellogg’s, there just wasn’t enough taste and crunchiness, they were in fact, very bland.
If you add sugar to them though, this changes the taste completely and makes them a nice, enjoyable cereal, really different, with no salty aftertaste.
The Kwik Save’s brand of corn flakes doesn’t stay crunchy for long enough when you add milk and that is one improvement that could be done to make these better. But hey, you get what you pay for!

How much?

The Kwik Save’s brand is extremely cheap. They are 47p for a 500g bag. And I say bag, cause that is what the packaging is, a cheap plastic type bag, which can be another down-fall if you don’t have a container to store them in once opened.

Extra Info

The information on the packaging tells you that these do contain Gluten and are made in a factory where nuts are present so may contain traces of nuts.

Nutrition Information

Kwik Save simply corn flakes are suitable for vegetarians and are a low fat food. A 30g serving (and this is with semi-skimmed milk) contains 171 calories and 2.5g of fat, most of the fat coming from the milk. They also contain vitamins and iron, as many as what other cereals do.

Would I recommend these cornflakes?

This is a hard one really. Personally I like these cornflakes, and will eat them if they’re in the cupboard, but the rest of my family think that they are disgusting. So I would say, yes, go out and buy some, especially if you spend loads on cereal and want to reduce your shopping bill, you just may, like me, like them. They’re certainly worth trying for the price! Just don’t expect them to be anything like the more popular, dearer brands. As I said before, you get what you pay for!
