The Kyocera Finecam S5R is a fantastic little bundle. It is a small, light, robust and fully featured SLR digital camera designed to be useful for everyone, from the casual snap-shot taker to someone interested in artistic photography. It has only a few flaws that set it behind other models, but this is entirely compensated for the fantastic low price of the camera. A great deal for anyone.
When originally marketed, the Finecam was the world's smallest and lightest digital camera. The camera's lens retracts into the main body when it is off so that the object remains as small as possible, but when in photo-shooting mode the lens smoothly extends. Likewise the flash only pops up when it is to be used, otherwise remaining tucked into the main shell. It is definitely light, but perhaps no longer the smallest; nevertheless it fits snugly into one hand. Usefully it comes with a cord - you should wrap this around your arm in case the camera slips from your grip!
The camera does take very good pictures, in sizes up to 5.0 megapixels and in a good high quality. Even better, the camera comes with a full video mode - it takes videos at about 0.5 megapixels (which is perfectly acceptable unless you want HD) and in 30 frames per second. The 30fps rate is quite rare for this type of camera so it's a definite plus. Of course, the video can also record sound. Unfortunately at high detail the camera can only film for about 30 seconds at a time. In lowest quality it manages about 5 minutes.
The major fall for the quality of images is that the camera seems to require sunlight to maintain crispness. Images taken without sunlight (e.g. using interior lighting) are always grainy and inferior. Furthermore images taken in dimness are usually atrocious. Videos suffer most from this: sunlit videos are fine, but any dimness or artificial light leads to grainy, scan-lined, flickery videos. Although the camera offers night-time compensation modes, these are largely useless.
The camera allows an exposure shift of between -2 and +2, which is very handy. In bright light it is often good to set the exposure down to -0.7 as this avoids a washed out image. Likewise in darkness increasing the exposure will capture shadowed details. However increasing the exposure nearly always results in blurry pictures as this causes the lens to stay open for longer and there appears to be no compensation for this. Thus the exposure increase functions are useless unless you have a tripod. It should be noted that the above flaws noted regarding poor lighting are not made better by increasing or decreasing exposure - it is the constancy and diffusion of sunlight that creates crisp images, not the brightness. In general, although the exposure functions are useful for most shots, they can be quite temperamental and you will often get unexpected results.
Accompanying the exposure functions are White Balancing, Metering and Focus options - all the standard ones you'd expect on a digital camera - which can all be accessed via a simple menu interface. The menu system is quite strong in general, offering easy navigation via the used of a joystick; this allows you to change all the options with just the flick of a single thumb, making it quick to customise on the spot. There is also a scene-change button that quickly prepares the camera for special shots, such as landscapes or Macro Mode (i.e. close-ups).
The shutter button is responsive and makes a tactile click when pressed. It has a good function whereby you can press it down half-way to capture a focusing level and then alter the frame of the shot. This can be useful if you want to focus on something that isn't directly in the centre of the photo. The camera also comes with an adequate optical zoom and flash, both of which function as expected.
The Finecam accepts SD cards up to any size, and has a Lithium Ion battery, meaning it can last for a very long time and recharge indefinitely. However, watch out: overcharging the battery will break it. I discovered this when I left the camera to charge overnight. This charged it for several hours more than it needed, and doing this repeatedly has now lowered my battery life to about 30 minutes. Usually it would be several hours. Another similar flaw is that after some years of use, the flash doesn't popup anymore without being prised up manually.
Overall the Finecam S5R is small, cheap and lightweight, with all the standard features of a digital SLR, an exceptional video mode, but some poor setbacks: bad images out of sunlight, and slight flakiness. Despite this the camera genuinely is capable of taking some extremely good photos.
Advantages: Picture Quality, Ease of Use, Small Size Disadvantages: Auto Focus in Dim light, Slow to write to memory
...to go. The Kyocera has a 5MP resolution and gives truly staggering picutres for a camera of this size. I would say that the results are comparable to 35mm film at sizes up to 10x8 inches and far superior to my APS canon IXUS, which I no longer use, in fact I no longer use film!!
Crisp Pictures with excellent colour rendition, low noise and good quality. The camera has a range of compression and resolution options, but with memory prices coming down, ... ...I suspect this is common of all digital cameras. This is especially noticable after shooting a video sequence.
Overall extremely pleased with the purchase and would buy another Kyocera Camera, except for the fact that the S5 is so good, I probably won't need to for a long time. ...

Advantages: 5mpix, 12x zoom, daybright tft, looks awesome Disadvantages: none as far as I can tell
I have purchased this camera very recently for the absolute bargain price of £250. It was on a one day special at my local camera shop 'Jacobs'. This price is unbelievable since the cheapest I can find it on the net is at least £270, and in most shops retails for £330 plus. It is a modern camera, and appears to have been launched around jan 03.
Features: having researched a new camera for weeks, this had everything I could possibly want.
-Small ... ...last! unlike some flimsy digicams around.
-5mpix, previously unheard of around these prices. Enables prints up to A3 looking very sharp.
-Fantastic zoom, 3x optical, 4x digital. Optical wont spoil quality of pics, so is very useful, however digital zoom as you may know, lessens the quality of the pixels, but since this is a 5mpix cam, it works great.
-Macro feature for extreme close ups from around 12cm.
-long life rechargeable battery
-video ...

Advantages: Great Functionality Disadvantages: Short Battery Life
I first bought the camera to take pictures for websites, and was plesantly surprised to find all the features it had.
The main factor i considered when buying it was the price. A lot of 2 Megapixel cameras were sufficient however, i felt the extra 3 Megapixels provided by the SR5 warrented the small price penalty.
I've managed to take some really good pictures with this camera, including some for a family wedding. So now i use the camera for anything ... ...would say this camera would be a perfect first step for somebody wanting to go further into photography, or similarly this camera would suit the home user looking for higher quality photos.
The camera has a fairly large LCD display which is easy to see, in all light conditions. I have noticed that keeping the display on does eat at the battery a lot though.
It's advanced features take a bit of reading about but the instruction manual is clear and ...

Advantages: Light,Small And easy to use Disadvantages: Battery life and Reading or writing to memory
This is a good digital camera from a company that does not produce that many. We all know the main competition is between Kodak and Sony industries. This camera has 5 million mega pixels and 12X zoom. It is light and small so can easily be placed in any reasonable sized pocket. This camera comes only in a silver colour. There is also a screen featured on the back of the camera, which is very hard to clean when it gets dirty. This is a good quality ... ...structure. There is a 16-mega secure digital memory card that comes a standard will the camera. This is rubbish as you can only store about 16 pictures or two 30-second movies. Also when you zoom out, by you get to 8X the picture starts to become a tiny bit fuzzy. No cover comes with the camera, which was disappointing. The battery life is reasonable when only taking pictures but when taking video clips the battery life goes after a few clips. Also ...

Finecam S5 is the world's smallest, lightest digital camera with an effective resolution of 5 million pixels and an optical 3x zoom lens. Thanks to a CCD of 5.25 million pixels for the shooting element (1/1.8 square pixels, using a primary color filter), highly precise, beautiful color reproduction has been achieved. In addition, among other cameras with an effective resolution of 5 million pixels and an optical 3x zoom lens, this product is the world's smallest and lightest. The dimensions in millimeters are: 92 (width) x 57.5 (height) x 33 (depth), and the weight excluding batteries is approximately 165 grams.Equipped with a high-resolution optical 3x zoom lens to achieve more than 200 lines/mm at the center of the projection resolution, with a focal distance ranging from 7.3 mm in the Wide-angle mode to 21.9 mm in the Telephoto mode 3, the camera enables you to shoot high-quality pictures of landscapes, ceremonies and portraits, which resembles silver-salt films in image quality. The use of four non-spherical lenses enhances the cameras' performance and enables it to be more compact. Using the optical 3x zoom in conjunction with the digital 4x zoom enables you to shoot pictures with a magnification of 12x. Digital 2x zoom is possible during playback.
