...After my negative last printer review, I’ve decided to review another of our collection. The Kyocera FS 680 is my personal favourite. Which is a strange thing to admit under the circumstances!! About a year ago while in the process of finding new printers my boss suggested this one, to which I recalled what the hell is the point in buying it…We need A3 minimum and definitely something capable of printing colour. My boss inevitably ignored my comments and headed straight out to purchase this.
Incredibly this printer has since become a god send. Although only able to print A4 and black and white, this printer consistently chugs away day after day without a glitch. Before I launch into a buy now buy now speech I’ll tell you the features of the printer and let you decide!
Compatibility:

Advantages: Very reliable, low cost per page Disadvantages: None
...is more than any other printer in that class. Black toner cost around £55, color around £80.
Standard paper feeder has capacity of 500 sheets (60-105g/m2, A4, B5, A5, Letter and custom 148x210 to 216x356mm), manual feeder takes up to 100 sheets (60-200g/m2, A4 B5, A5, Letter, Legal, Custom 70x148 - 216x297mm).
It has unique type ceramic drum (Kyocera patent) which makes it last lifetime of printer. It makes maintenance much easier job (no need for drum replacing) and significantly reduces cost of printing.
It's maximum average duty cycle is (according to producer) 15000 pages per month, although it can take much more.
It has wide range of accessories improving its (already impressive) performance: duplex unit (a must have in office environment), three additional paper feeders (each takes up to 500 sheets), power envelope feeder, hard...

...and tacky button to adjust the paper size. If the printer has gone into energy saving green mode, the whirring wheels will catch the envelope, and you get a blank envelope. Once warmed up the printer then detects that you actually want an envelope printed, realises that there is no envelope in the manual feed tray and defaults to the stack of A4. Thus, you get a sheet of A4 with an address on it. Very useful. The start-up procedure also seems to take ages!
The resolution is extremely good quality, as with all laser printers and is quoted as 600dpi by the manufacturers. Print speed is 12ppm. The ML6040 has a USB 1.1 port and the single lower paper tray has room for 270 A4 sheets. Printing costs are low, as despite the toner cartridge costing £80 or so - it can output a claimed 6000 pages - more than enough for a small user.

A while back I stayed at the fabulous Malmaison in Birmingham's Mailbox as a treat for my birthday. A so called "boutique" hotel (whatever that means), it is one of the few places I have stayed at that thoroughly deserved it's 5* rating. And so, on with... more
