Manufacturer's product description
Intel LANDesk Management Suite 6.2 continues to be the "de facto standard” in today's industry, as the first system management tool to take advantage of heterogeneous environments that contain platforms or operating systems such as Microsoft Windows 98 and Novell NetWare 5.0. Intel LANDesk Management Suite can manage environments that have hundreds or even thousands of clients. It offers benefits throughout a PC's life cycle, from software deployment through ongoing management and protection. With Intel LANDesk Management Suite, you can take remote control of all client PCs on both Windows NT and Novell NetWare networks from a single point of administration. Giving you robust support for both types of operating systems from a common console and graphical user interface, providing flexibility and scalability for mixed network environments. Methodologies are provided within Intel LANDesk Management Suite for rapid deployment (for smaller environments) as well as phased deployment (for larger environments). Completely integrated, with shared support for five ODBC-compliant databases and a reporting tool, this award-winning suite of management applications works together to help maximize IT staff productivity and increase user uptime. Support is included for DMI-enabled components and major management systems.
Advantages: FREE, Not Microsoft, Flexibility, Cost per user, 2 server licences Disadvantages: Limited backup system requiring a third party product.

Novell® Small Business Suite6 (SBS6) is surely the most profoundly extensive Personal Computer Network Suite available today. It is a huge package at a very reasonable price, and I can do nothing but recommend it to any business with less than 50 network users.
For those with larger organisations, each component is available separately, so you won't have to buy components you don`t require. But for those with less than 50 users, the price and flexibility cannot be beaten.
In my opinion it runs not just rings, but body sized hoops round Microsoft's Small Business solution. NSBS6 is more extensive and much easier to both implement and manage on a daily basis.

...-It utilities. This means you get all the hard disk diagnostic tools and registry optimisation utilities that you’ll ever want in one package. The main program links with an online driver and program update service, to help you find the latest files and patches. Updating your hardware drivers and software can prevent crashes and other problems.

SystemSuite’s Uninstaller program is impressive, being able to remove programs completely or move them to another disk – useful if you’ve repartitioned your hard disk or added an extra one. It can even archive an application so that it can be restored when you need it – without losing your customised settings. It doesn’t work on Windows Installer-compatible program installations, though, which is understandable for technical reasons...

Advantages: Simple to use once configured. Disadvantages: Takes a little time for the complete novice but not to difficult to learn.
...Zone alarm has been the staple diet for freebie software user for many years. Thier free firewall has been downloaded millions of times and is very stable. Although frightening to see how many hackers have had a go at your computer it is reassuring knowing that you have help. The completesuite provides just that including protecting you against viruses, spyware, phising, etc. Takes a little getting use to but the start up wizard help. Anyone familiar with the their firewall will be completly at ease with the suite. Although some of the anti-theft features are US only it shouldn't put you off as these are only a tiny part of the package. Once configures it is unobtrusive and reassuring. There is a 15 day trial from the website if you want to have a go first. All in all a top package....
