Introduction

Conventional CRT TVs are almost a thing of the past – the future belongs firmly to flat screen TVs. The sizes and colours of flat screen TVs available today are many and varied, but so too is the quality.

In general, there are two major product categories: LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) and Plasma TVs.

As there are only a few small plasma TVs the choice between LCD and plasma only really becomes relevant if you are looking at a 37 inch or larger TV screen. While both systems offer a high image quality, potential buyers should consider the following issues before purchasing.

As with many things in life the choice of the right television depends on the way it is used. Where should it be placed? Do I want to enjoy movies at cinema quality or to play console games instead?

What’s my type? LCD or plasma?

LCDs work with liquid crystals. These create an image by breaking the light in a certain way. To avoid reflections and other interferences most devices are featured with matt fronts. Compared to plasma TVs colours are more luminous and provide brilliant colours even in bright rooms. However, many TVs have problems displaying a deep black, which can sometimes appear faded. In addition, most will only deliver a high quality image if the viewer sits directly in front of it. If you’re watching from more than a 45 degree visual angle (i.e. outside the principal axis of the TV) the contrast is reduced and the image can appear grey. This is a result of the LCD backlight format.

LCD TVs

Plasma devices were at the forefront of the flat screen movement. The technology is based upon ionised gas or plasma, which is illuminated through electronic impulses. The devices deliver true colours even outside the principal axis. As plasma has a very short response time it is perfectly suited for quick image changes such as sport broadcasts.

However, one problem with plasma TVs is the so-called burning-in or after image. Do you watch a lot of non-standard format videos (black bars) or play console games with static graphics? If this is the case, the overcharging of the light beams can sometimes burn a visible pattern into the TV screen. This can also occur through static TV station logos. This is much more unlikely with newer plasma models but the risk should still be taken into account.

Toshiba 20inch W 330 D and excellent buy.

Advantages: Easy to use, durable and high picture quality.
Disadvantages: Slow response from remote controll to television.

My experience with this tv so far has been excellent. I have had this tv for a year now and no problems what so ever. Its a really user friendly tv with excellent picture quality. The brightness and contrast can be set easily to what you desire with minimum fuss. The tv itself is very durable and i can see it lasting a long time if looked after. However its not a perfect buy. Occassionally i found the response from the remote to the tv to be slow ...

An excellent tv!

Advantages: Low cost, HD ready TV with fantastic sound
Disadvantages: Only one HDMI connector

I bought this tv about 5 months ago so i think its about time for me to write a review! > What the tv has - Firstly it has a good sized screen (68cm visible) that is in the normal 16:9 widescreen format. This means you can watch programs like eastenders without having the sides cut off the screen. Although it is not one of the larger models, its size is more than adequate (I personally think if i had one with a bigger screen it would be too big) ...
...that when High Definition television starts in 2006, or when HD DVD's become available, you will get a drastically increased picture quality. I know it sounds corny, but you have to see an HD TV in the flesh to appreciate how much better the picture quality is - gone are the days of a flat picture, instead the images jump out the screen with amazing detail. - It has 20W Stereo sound - That means that the sound that comes out of it is always perfect. ...

The most fantastic HDTV on a budget A+++++

Advantages: High Quality product, excellent picture
Disadvantages: Only one it's not wall mountable

...we have had a fantastic Toshiba 42'' rear projection TV. We had been looking around for a new television and really wanted an HD-Ready LCD television. Unfortunately our funds were somewhat lacking and the choice was fairly narrow. Having been used to a large screen television, we were very concerned that the new television would be disappointing. There were a few 'less known' manufactures that had televisions available for around £800 with a screen ...
...27WLT56 as apart from the screen size, met all the criteria. Having spent many hours researching the television and reading the limited reviews available, I decided to purchase this make and model. I was absolutely amazed when I was able to reduce the price from £800 at John Lewis to just shy of £500 through Digital Direct. Once I had ordered it I began to worry about the quality and whether or not I had made the right decision. I took delivery ...

Great Picture from a Top Tosh

Advantages: Sleek Design, Freeview built in, Easy to use, nice picture, HD ready
Disadvantages: Slow freeview functions, dodgy remote, fixed stand, standby mode

The Toshiba 26WLT66 has found it's way into our newly decorated bedroom to replace our ageing 14" CRT set and oddly it doesn't look as big! At 26" the screen size will sound large, but when you view it, the dimensions can be deceiving. We went for the Tosh purely down to convenience - we wanted a good quality TV with freeview built in to save cluttering up the bedroom again with more AV equipment. What we didn't realise was the lack of TV's in this ...
...about this but to take Toshiba for example it's so miniscure at the front of the manual you would easily miss it. The red icon is just as bad, so be warned. Once you have image retention, the set is irrepairable. 2) The TV will not turn off - by that I mean that even if you use the power button it will only go to "standby" mode. If you want complete power down, then you will have to switch off at the mains. 3) The unit only comes with a fixed stand ...

The greatest gift at Christmas!

Advantages: Sleak, Doesn't take up much space and great quality all around!
Disadvantages: None that I can think of

...the time anyway. The Toshiba has lasted a year so far with no problems which is really good because in my experience with Electronic goods, some brands have trouble. I Won't go into names in this review but I would recommend Toshiba products . I can't really comment on how Durable it is, i've never dropped it! I wouldn't advise dropping it haha. The remote control is good, you can switch between DVD, VCR and TV which is good if you have Toshiba ...
...these days. The picture quality is great! The sound is good, the instruction book is very straight forward and tuning the channels was very straight forward and you just follow whats on screen. The Television is certainly great value for money and I Would recommend this to all. ...
